I think it's a territorial thing, Ian. Our neighbors had a beagle that tried to hump a bird once simply because it was there...Male cats, female cats, male or female dogs...and then birds...I even saw him hump a carpet once. But I think it was more a territory thing than a horny thing.

its not just territorial, it is mostly a dominance thing... my dog and my parents dog tried humping all the time but they gave up. i guess they figured they are on equal ground. its not a gay thing, just saying whos the boss.
