I just found out this week-end how far behind the rest of the world we are when it comes to broadband connections.
Do you know that in the US we pay $3.18 per Megabit per second. So a 10 Megabit connection will cost you $31.80 per month. And the upload speed is very slow compared to the download speed of 10 megabits.
But in Japan, the average user has 100 Megabit up and down connection and only spend $.22 per Megabit per second. So their 100 Megabit up/down connection runs them $22.00 a month.
They can do this because the companies that own the infrastructure must lease out the lines and equipment to other companies making it competitive to all companies. Unlike the US where the major companies monopolize the infrastructure and price it out as they see fit.
:dunno Just something to think about.
and for those of you that think, Oh well, that's capitalism... The companies in Japan that must share the equipment, they still make tons of money by leasing out the equipment to other companies. It's just that the government realized that it would benefit all if it was made public.
