Breast milk ice cream goes on sale in Covent Garden

A restaurant in London's Covent Garden is serving a new range of ice cream, made with breast milk.

The dessert, called Baby Gaga, is churned with donations from London mother Victoria Hiley, and served with a rusk and an optional shot of Calpol or Bonjela.

Mrs Hiley, 35, said if adults realised how tasty breast milk was more new mothers would be encouraged to breastfeed.

Each serving of Baby Gaga at Icecreamists costs £14.

Mrs Hiley's donation was expressed on site and pasteurised before being churned with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest.

Icecreamists founder Matt O'Connor placed an advert appealing for breast milk donations and believes his new recipe will be a success.

"If it's good enough for our children, it's good enough for the rest of us," he said.

"Some people will hear about it and go yuck - but actually it's pure organic, free-range and totally natural."

Mrs Hiley, who gets £15 for every 10 ounces of milk she donates to the company, said it was a great "recession beater".

"What's the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash?" she added.

"I teach women how to get started on breastfeeding their babies. There's very little support for women and every little helps."

Mr O'Connor said 14 other women had come forward to offer their services. Health checks for the lactating women were the same used by hospitals to screen blood donors.

"No-one's done anything interesting with ice cream in the last hundred years," he added.

So who wants breast milk ice cream?

Personally.... Yuck!

Do people realize that breast milk flavor changes based on what the woman drinks/eats?

I'm with you on this one. How about the transmission of diseases? I haven't done the research but my gut tells me there is that possibility.

I think the article said the women were screened for diseases the same way blood donors are.

It can definitely safely be tested. Hospitals in the UK have breast milk banks where breastfeeding mothers can donate blood which can be used for premature babies in the hospital or given to mothers to use on their own children. I saw it on the news a couple of weeks back and a parenting site I'm a member of, some members have donated their milk to hospitals.

It's been withdrawn now.

Posted on: 3/2/2011 8:23:05 AM by David Lewis A hugely popular dessert has been withdrawn from sale at a Covent Garden restaurant over health and safety fears.

ice-cream.jpgThe dessert called Baby Gaga and made from human breast milk caused a sensation when it went on sale last week, despite misgivings from a number of patrons.

Now, following complaints from the public, Westminster Council health officials have asked for it to be withdrawn until further tests can be carried out on its safety,

The restaurant has insisted that the donors were medically screened for any potential diseases and the milk was pasteurised before being churned. Other supporters have laughed at the council’s comment that the food must be ‘fit for human consumption asking what else breast milk is for?

The dessert sold for £14 and rather bizarrely was offered with an optional ‘sauce’ of Calpol or Bonjela. It regularly sold out leading other breast feeding mums to offer their own milk.

Now, others are suggesting that there is something underhand going on and that it may be a rival, jealous at the volume of business Icecreamist was generating, who made the complaint to the council.

The restaurant is confident the matter will be resolved and say that the extra publicity generated is likely to be beneficial in the long term.

A spokesman from the council said that the issue was one of protecting the public and they had to be sure there was no risk of contracting viruses through the dessert.

They went on to say they applauded and supported the innovative ideas of their small businesses and hoped that the all clear would be given soon.

They would need to do some serious strict diets to get the same taste for the ice cream.

I don't think I wouldn't willingly try it, I've tried my own breast milk, Bryan's gotten some during foreplay, and both children had it until they weaned themselves, and I drink cow's milk. That's the extent of my desire to experiment with breast milk.
