An 8-year-old boy jumps rope in honor of his late baby sister who died of a heart disorder.
He wanted to raise money for heart research.
The Searcy boy made his own website and raised money both in memory of his sister and in honor of his grandfather who had heart surgery last summer.
Colton Hambrick says it was simple. With his mom's help, he created his own homepage on the American Heart Association's website that talked about little Olivia and her struggle with a condition she had since birth. He sent out an email asking for support for his big jump rope event.
His mom, Lisa Hambrick, tells us about the email, "The email said, 'Hi, I'm Colton Hambrick. I'm 8 years old. I'm doing Jump Rope for Heart in memory of Olivia and honor of Papaw Jim.'"
Colton jumped rope in his school gym with his entire class watching. That was Feb. 14.
Lisa says, "He was jumping as hard as he could. So hard, he fell and he'd get back up and jump again."
He was jumping for little sister Olivia who died just before her first birthday. After undergoing three heart related surgeries, complications from blood clots ended her life.
Lisa says, "We got to hold her and take her off the ventilator. It was hard but we knew she was going to a better place. We knew she'd be okay."
They say Colton had a special bond with his baby sister. With what little time they had together, they'd watch Saturday morning cartoons, read books, and play on the floor. Colton says, “She would roll until she got tired and then suck her thumb. She'd try to pull my hair."
Colton raised $270 jumping rope. He promises to do it again next year on Valentine's Day to raise even more money in memory of his baby sister.
Colton's grandpa underwent a double by-pass operation last summer. He's doing just fine today. Colton thinks the jump rope event made his grandpa very happy. Colton also told us he jumped for his sister's friends in heaven who had heart conditions.
