A few people I work with were having a discussion the other day and I was just wondering what you guys think. Well, as you all know, there are sooo many teenagers getting pregnant now and we were discussing whether or not to put, lets say a 13 yr old, on birth control. A few said that they definitely would put them on it so they wouldnt have to worry about their daughter getting pregnant and a few people said, hell No. Because they said if you put them on birth control they are gonna think you are giving them the okay to go ahead and have sex. What would you do if you were in that situation. I have a 7 yr old daughter and I dont think I would put her on birth control.

I say if you are going to do it then make it their 17th birthday, or something maybe even theyre 16th. 13 is way toooooooo young. at least when they are 16 they should know all about sex and they are going to choose to do it or not do it by that age anyway. so if you dont give them birth control then they could just go out and buy condoms anyway. plus birth control would promote unprotected sex which as compared to condoms does not protect you from the millions that do have std's if you just happen to have sex with one of them.

I think it is the parents responsibility to educate their children about sex and the consequences of having sex. I.E. if say for instance I were to catch one of my kids having sex before they are married and moved out of my house then the consequence would be a trip to the emergency room for all parties involved.
Seriously though, I think 13 is way too young to be putting a girl on birth control. I think 16 is a better age because, as was already mentioned, they are a bit more educated and a "little bit" more mature.

just have open conversationsd with your children when they are interested in sex... ie: maybe 13ish- begin talking? sex doesnt need to be such an embarassing topic or awkward conversation for parents and children. but birth control?- get the fuck outta here! no way! if your kids are going to be having sex- let them do it PROTECTED, birth control is in no way, shape, or form protection- it is prevention. and no kid should be having sex at 13. 16 is fine for birth control b/c by 16- they are probly having sex... but take it case-by-case. i will just have you know, my kids arent using BC at 13!

i kindof think that giving them birth control at such a young age gives them the feeling that it is ok.. BUT if you know that your child is already in that situation, then get the birth control.. like others have said, it is up to the parents.

For me this question is a hard one. I for one cannot imagine 13 year olds having sex….although I do know it’s happening more and more….younger and younger. I’m not old (32), but the last thing I thought about at 13 was boys….much less sex!

I do think this subject is in the hands of the parents. There is no “one size fits all” approach on this subject….there are way too many variables. I do think if they are already having sex, they are probably better off getting on the birth control…but at 13 that is just so inconceivable to me. I do also think it will promote not using condoms, which is also a huge downfall. There are worse things than pregnancy!

I have 3 kids, boy 11, girl 8, and boy 9 months. My older son already has “girlfriends” and that bothers me bad!!! We have not yet really sat down and had the birds and bees talk…and maybe we should. We do need to educate him on safe sex. While we do not have to worry about the birth control with him, we still have an obligation to make sure he is doing what he needs to be doing.

While I never want to think of any of them having sex before they are married, I cannot expect that to be a reality. I always said when they start getting to their teenage years, we’ll move to the country where there’s no trouble to get into. But I know that’s not a solution….actually would probably be worse. I guess they have nothing to do BUT have sex.

If my daughter came to me at 13 and told me she was having sex I would feel as if I did something wrong. There was something I did, or didn’t do to prevent this. I don’t think I could bring myself to put her on birth control. But on the other hand, I certainly could not handle pregnancy either. Abortion is not a word in my vocabulary.

I really don’t know what I’d do until I’m in this situation. I pray I teach my kids well enough, and pray they stay in the good crowd of kids so I don’t have to deal with it so young.

i don't mean to get off the subject.....well, its kinda on the same subject of birth control. i was with this girl that was not on BC and she had a sweet smell down there... then she went on BC. it didn't start until about a month after she was on it, but it didn't have the same smell to it. it didn't stink or smell bad, it just had a very distint smell to it... i was just wondering when women get on it, does it change the smell of the muffin? this is a serious question.

back on the subject, my daughter would not be having sex until she was atleast 18!! birthcontrol or not.....

I wouldnt doubt it....food can make a difference, so fooling around with hormones probably could too. I've never personally experienced it, but I would bet theres someone that has.

well, i am a teenager and here is my perspective (may help or not?)

i choose to hang out with the people i do because i dont want to get mixed up with drugs and violence. i do drink underage occasionally, but who doesnt. i will never drink and drive. sex is great, but only with a condom. i care enough to protect myself and others. many of my friends feel the same way too.

there is a different crowd though. the "cool" crowd does the drugs, has the slutty sex, and breaks about every damn law imagineablge with hopes their parents will bail them out.

then there is my friends and me (the "responsible" crowd). we like to have fun. we dont break many laws. we dont expect others to bail us out of trouble. we have morals, values....

so basically it comes down to who your kids hang out with. it isnt always enough to ask "where are you going?", it is more important to ask "who are you going with"...

i heard on the radio today that stats have proven, if you child is a nerd/geek in school, they are less likely to get into trouble. if your child is the popular in school, they are more likely to get into trouble.
