I remember going to college/university for the first time and was approached by a few classmates and they asked if I could join them in a prayer service. I said sure, but just for a prayer, right? well, we are thinking about having a "club" here at school for those who have lost their faith and want to be re-baptized in the lord...I said no....but damn that was nearly twenty years ago!!! Jesus Christ...oh well....what were we talking about?

Jehovah's Witnesses stop by my house once a year. My wife just sends them away. I would probably talk to them. Maybe even go to their church if they invited me. I'm curious what their church services are like. Not sure if they'd appreciate an atheist eavesdropping on them though.

Many many times.

Jehovah Witnesses stopped coming to my house after I invited them in, asked if they wanted to read the Satanic Bible with me and convert to that religion. They now miss out my house when doing their rounds.

I have some Born Again Christians though who are absolutely desperate to recruit me, they keep coming to my house and when I shut the door in their face, they start shouting verses from the bible through the letterbox and tell me what is happening to me if I don't convert asap. Apparantly I can't walk into Churches, my head will start twisting around, I'll be possessed, throw up and I'll masturbate with crucifixes (does that sound like the plot to the Exorcist or is that just me?). They want to save me and my daughter from that.

I can remember three times where religious folks have come to my door recruiting. The first were Mormon when I was a teenager. I invited them in and had a nice chat although I declined their invite. The second were Southern Baptist who asked me incriminating questions about who wrote the Bible and was the Bible the word of God? I told them the Bible was the word of man and eventually they went away with a "you'll-burn" look on their faces. The third was this last year with some more Baptists. I had a respectful chat on my doorstep.

I think if you are a poor lost soul, having scripture quoted to you with all sorts of good things promised if you accept the God could be very attractive, but it is kind of like listening to a salesman read you the company product literature. You have to decide if this guy is the real deal or a snake-oil seller. Or like me, you mostly remain undecided.

I think there could be quite a few hedge-your-bets believers out there, too worried about being damned to rationally evaluate the situation. :)
