The problem with this quote is the highlighted. It is impossible to be master of your fate. As fate is believed to be pre-determined, just the same as destiny, if you subscribe to that sort of thing, ergo that line is completely false due to his inability to recognize fate as being a force that cannot be changed or altered.

Being the master of your own fate does sound impossible but I think the idea is to work to help create your own future.

considering that mans life is a series of consequences based upon choices made or not made with thousands if not millions of variables either effecting or being affected by those choices, most of which are unknown, it is an exercise in futility to attempt to master ones life to achieve life's actual ending fate, it is possible however to make choices to achieve more immediate goals. if one could determine ones fate then it would no longer be considered living life it would be more along the lines of performing a preset routine...which to me is not living

I suppose the idea is to make your own choices instead of letting life happen to you. Taking whatever it gives you and saying 'actually no, I'm going to do it like this instead'.
