What is everyone's thought about Barry breaking the homerun record. Do you care that he is or isn't on steroids like he says or do you credit him with his success thus far? I personally say that it still takes hand and eye coordination to do such a task, but that is me. As far as the record is concerned I still have mixed thoughts.

Ortiz doesn't think Bonds has taken steroids - Barry Bonds - MSNBC.com

“To hit the frickin’ ball, the guy makes it look easy, but it ain’t. I don’t know how you can have that swing, consistently. I don’t know how steroids can do that,” Ortiz said.... “I don’t look at it like that. I look at it hitting-wise, because I don’t know what steroids can do to you as a baseball player. You’ve still got to swing the bat, man, He deserves respect,” Ortiz told the Herald. “People are not going to give it to him because of all the bad things running around, this and that, but people need to realize. I’ve heard a lot of different things about Barry Bonds, but people should just admit it — this guy’s a bad ass"

You know as well as I do that drug tests can be cheated just as easily as anything else.
IF he does one day test positive then I think the record should be voided simply because Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and all those other record setters didn't use performance enhancing drugs.
Personally, I think he's on the juice. I remember seeing his rookie card (which i wish I had a few of) and he was a skinny little fuck when he first entered the league. Now he's a fricken monster! It was the same with Jose Conseco, he was a little dude when he first entered the league and look at him now! And he admitted to using 'riods.

How do you know that Ruth and Aaron didn't use drugs? Half of this stuff wasn't even known about back in that era, but it existed. Baseball has had a culture of "anything to win" for years, that had to come from somewhere, aka the pioneers of the game. I wouldn't doubt AT ALL if older players were using substances that are now banned (maybe they weren't banned then, but they were still using them to get an edge). Especially given Ruth's predisposition to do things like that (the guy was a drunk). How do we know that Ruth didn't come to the park hopped up on cocaine? We don't. They didn't even drug test back then, so in essence he failed as many drug tests as Bond's has: 0.

It's this simple: People don't like Bond's because he is an asshole. Regardless of what substances he took, people simply don't like him. He isn't the humble hero that Aaron was. The simple fact that there is even suspicion that he took performance enhancers just gives people a reason to really come down on him. Whether he did or not is irrelevant at this point.

Like the OP said, I have mised thoughts, too. Yes, he did/does take performance enhancing drugs, but he also has to have some natural talent to actually make those drugs look effective. I guess he fell into peer pressure and the convincing from his so-called advisors to take drugs, which is sad because he was talented before he started taking drugs.

And I agree with what Whitey said and would include Mark McGuire on that list, too.

And as far as Babe Ruth, sure he could have done coke, but obviously he had natural talent, too, because he was somewhat unhealthy as far as eating habits and weight were concerned. So, if people want to go back and try to investigate Ruth through forensics and first person testimony, go for it. Hank Aaron, I don't know about any drugs, but since he's still alive, it should be easy enough to get some info from him.

The one thing that bugs me is that Bonds' brother and some other people are raking Aaron over the coals because he has said he will not be there when Bonds does break the homerun record. Aaron has said it's because he doesn't travel because of his health. I say to Bonds' brother and others: Stop taking things so personal; you guys are always on the defensive and want to keep pumping Bonds up as the greatest baseball player of all time.

Well, you would constantly be on the defensive as well if you put up with the crap Bond's does.

Look, I am not defending the guy, nor his alleged use of steroids, but lets face it, almost no one in baseball from that era was clean. I would say the clean players were the minority, not the majority, during that time period. That doesn't excuse anyone from doing it, but you have to put everything in context. If we want to asterisk Bond's record, then we have to go back and asterisk everything that happened between 1975 and 2005.

he's never tested positive so I say leave him the fuck alone till he does....other than that I don't like him

I wish I could find for you the progression of pics of his playing career. How he went from this scrawny dude to what he is now in ONE season. Its almost unreal to see those photos laid out.
