I grew up 3 blocks from my house, i'm no further from the tracks here than i was there. but I cannot get used to the damn trains again.

Scroll down to the rule number. The only one I ever have to hear is rule number 14(l). With a 14(b) and 14(g) every now and then. (I actually just heard a 14(g) while typing this.)
But with 5 crossings at grade within two miles of my house. I have to hear the 14(l) 5 separate times.
I wish we could get it banned here, I mean ALL the crossings have gates and lights except maybe one right here, but it's not a good safety measure (read the last paragraph in that link).
7-8 years ago a couple of drunk high schoolers (two years older than me actually) ran into a parked train doing 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. It was sitting there, the lights were blinking, the gates were down. They were drunk.
Their friends protested and tried to sue the city and N&S because "the lights weren't working".
Funny, but the news footage showed the lights working and the gate that was down, but broken at that time, was working as well.
I dunno. I hope I can get used to this whistling again. It's been 2 years since I had to put up with it at night.
