why the hell are there 3 people on an "atv" anyways?? and if you really gotta get around, why is the kid driving and not the mom? ugh... feel bad for the kid, but not for the mother.

ATV's and dirtbikes get a bad rap, usually due to those folks who misuse them or do not take safety precautions. My son is a successful moto racer (age 7) and he does not even load his bike without all his gear on.

Constantly, when I tell people about his riding, their first question is, "do you make him wear a helmet?" And I always say, "No." Then I continue to say, "He wears a helmet, plus a chest protector, neck guard, elbow and knee guards and moto boots."

My plea to anyone who hears stories like this is to not think that any child is too young to be put on a motorized vehicle. Any age is fine as long as ear protection is present before age 3.

I agree with Anniston. I was riding on my 3rd birthday. Personally I am very thankfull for that not only because of the joy it has brought to me, but also the advancement over others when it comes to operating motorized equipment at a younger age.

My 8 yr old daughter has her own 4 wheeler. Its a smaller one but she wears all her protection when she rides it. When she stays the night with her great grandparents, she rides his 4 wheeler alot too, but she just puts around the yard in it. It still makes me nervous as heck but it makes me feel a tad better knowing she is wearing her protection.

I have a 7 and 4 year old who ride. My 7 year old was riding since he was 3. He wasnt even talking yet and he was riding. Not by my choice...his uncle bought him one. And he picked up riding right away. They both loooooove it. It brings them so much happiness. I have also been riding dirtbikes and quads since I was about 10. My boys look forward to going to the pit and riding with their mommy. :D

I started riding before I could even reach the pegs... I am for it because I only crashed hard as an older person. I never crashed as a little kid. I was too scared to do anything dumb. It has become a spendy habit tho.

I have to confess that I replied to this topic without actually clicking the link (dial up is slow for most news links), but I checked it out this morning and something is so strange about that. How the heck does a mother bail, and not take the child? She obviously let the little girl sit behind her which to me, is not justifiable at that age especially.
