You have probably heard about the wet pet food recall. But you must know that reports have now surfaced with some dry cat foods. That is scary news for you if you feed your dog dry dog food. A dog's digestive system differs from a cat's, as it is slower, causing a longer period of time for the toxins to build up. It takes longer to digest dry food no matter dog or cat, which is why the wet food was the first to report. Now, we hear about the dry cat food, so the next tragedy will be dry dog food users to report illnesses and deaths.

Wheat gluten is the first target in this, but many believe that is not the sole cause of this toxic food. I would check your food labels and check for wheat gluten. I would advise you to change brands. No matter these recent reports, wheat gluten is bad for dogs, as it causes diabetes, especially small dogs.

I must sound like I am giving a lecture, but a dog owner in an online dog group I am involved with, lost her little dog 2 days before the recall was issued and found out she was eating recalled food. Now, another larger dog in their family has fallen ill with failing kidneys and the vets say it took him longer to show signs because he is larger and did not eat the wet food as a primary source of food, only cleaned up after the little dog was finished eating.

I am doing my best to find a comprehensive list and hopefully will have one today. I really want to inform all of my pet owning friends because I found out since my posts that treats sold in bins at pet stores sometimes contain wheat gluten and could contain the contaminants.

Holy crap I searched a bit deeper and found some treats that my cats have!!! Im scared!!! They are home and can get to them.
Wheat gluten has always been bad. It's in almost all of the pet foods. Only fancy feast specific canned food is free of wheat gluten.

best bet is to feed your dog something like Nature's Variety, Innova, Wellness, or Eagle Pack. Your pets will live a lot longer if you put them on healthier food.

Be careful looking for lists out there of recalled foods. Most are just listing the Menu brand foods, and daily more companies are added to the list.

Many companies are outsourcing for canning and bagging foods. No matter your pet food budget, compare and contrast what is in the foods within your means. Before the recall, I have been researching this for the sole purpose of bettering my dog's life. Now, I see it is so important to choose options low in byproducts and high in natural ingredients. anyone who buys their pet food at the grocery store or dollar general store is putting their pet's health at risk anyway, whether the food is recalled or not. That stuff just has crap in it anyways.

The truth of the matter is that sometimes people just get into financial situations that they can not afford to buy the more expensive foods. I have a 4 lb dog, so the cost does not affect me like it would if I had a Great Dane. That is why it is important to research which nutrient's your pet's breed needs the most due to health issues typical to the breed. Then, determine which brand in your price range is best.

i understand that people get in tight spots, but i think if people were in general more educated about dog food they would find that the net cost of buying better food equals out. I use very high quality pet food, and because there aren't fillers like corn in my food, i only have to feed 3/4 c a day to my dog. For a 100lb dog, for this high quality food you would only need to feed 3.5 cups a day.
