Well, it confirms what a lot of us in the graphics hardware hobby feared. ATI's latest chip, the R600, is just not cuttin' the mustard compared to NVidia's G80. It's a shame too, because I like healthy competition in the sector. At the same time, I am happy I made the investment on a pair of 8800GTS's. I haven't regretted it since the day I bought them (the amount of power these things have is unreal), but it's nice to have your decision affirmed.

For anyone interested, this probably the best review on the net to date. It uses real world performance rather than synthetic bench marks to show how the 2900XT is not really up to snuff at this point:

Timing couldn't be better for you to post this up. Thanks.

I assume you dig your duel 8800GTS's? :D

If you had to do it again, would you pop for a single GTX, and wait until you found something it couldn't handle, then buy the second, or would you go with the duel GTS's again?

I would stick to a single GTS, or better yet, wait until I could get my hands on the hot new Ultra. In fact, I almost DID get a single GTX, but the store was out (they were running a sweet deal on them). So I bought a GTS instead, and then decided what the hell, I will step-up my 7900GT to another 8800GTS. So I basically got the second one for 150 bucks.

I like my SLi cards, but they can be a pain in the rear. Some games just don't like the SLi thing, and some games don't get a ton of improvement from it.

I would say either get an 8800GTX, or if you can hold out a couple of weeks, get an 8800 Ultra and be done with it. You will be able to run anything in the next 12-18 months at max settings with a single GTX or Ultra, and if you need to add a second one as a stop-gap upgrade path later, you can. Also, buy eVGA if you can. Best support in the biz, in my opinion, and their step up program is awesome. If you buy an 8800 from them, and the new 8900 refresh happens to come out within 90 days of your purchase, you can step the 8800 up to an equivalent tier 8900 for just the price difference.

How do I find them? Are their prices pretty fair?
