I continue to be blessed with clear night skies while at work so I've been taking more pictures. First off, let me say that the moon is a heck of a lot harder to get good pictures of than I originally thought. I was out there for a good hour tonight trying to get a decent shot of the moon setting and they all looked like crap. Perhaps I don't have the right lens. I don't know... Anyway, there's this picture that I will share. It's not what I intended to do but the effect is kinda cool nonetheless. Some trees backlit by the moon.

I also tried to get some pictures of constellations. This first one is Scorpius (my favourite). Unfortunately this constellation never rises completely above the horizon this far north so this is just a part of it. The three stars in the upper left corner form the claws of the scorpion. The reddish star a little lower down among the tree branches is Antares. Literally translated it means "opposing Ares" (Mars). It was so named because it looks a lot like the planet Mars in the sky.

The bright bluish star in this picture is Spica, which is part of the constellation Virgo.

The bright star towards the left side is Deneb. It's part of the constellation Cygnus (swan). It's also known as the Northern Cross because it looks like a cross. If you look at the picture sideways you can see it using the brighter stars.

This last one is of the star Vega, which is the brightest star in the picture. It's part of the constellation Lyra but it's kinda hard to pick out in this picture.

I can't remember what settings I used for the moon pic. The constellations I set my f-stop to 4.2, exposure time was 13-15 seconds and my ISO was 1600. Focal length varied but I was using my 55-200mm lens.

If I could afford a different lens, maybe. :p But while I haven't gotten the pictures I've set out to take so far, I HAVE gotten some unintentional shots that I thought were rather cool. :D
The more you shoot the more mistakes you make and the more you learn. I keep reminding myself that photography is supposed to be fun fun fun.

LOL! You know what's annoying? Having everything set up for a nice shot and then having it turn out blurry because the cat came along and rubbed up against the tripod. :24:

zirc I took this shot about 5pm today. Unfortunately because there's 250,000 miles between the moon and the leaves the focus on the leaves is a bit off. :(

Same shot. I just cropped the moon. :D

What...you can't fix the out-of-focus leaves by changing your aperture setting? :24: :jk

That's quite the nice shot. An e-friend of mine took this real cool picture of a bald eagle with a half-moon.

He lives in Nanaimo and does photography for a living. He's my hero. You should see some of his aurora shots.

It's a beautiful shot of my favorite bird and he lives in the perfect place to shoot 'em.
