I was watching a discussion on the flight that crashed in San Francisco ( Asiana 214 ) and could not help but wonder how many first time captains get proper training by co-pilots that are also captains so they are properly trained.

every airport has it subtle little tricks about taking off and landing, which are the most dangerous part of flying in normal conditions, which need to be taught properly.

As planes get bigger and more technologically advanced it will bring about more challenges but certainly flying is by far still the safest method of transport we have.

Pilots had lots of experience but the guy at the controls had only 43 hours in a 777 and had never landed at SFO. Still the trainer should have noticed the airspeed was way low for that airport. Reports say over 40 mph too slow, which allowed it to drop quicker and end up short of the runway. Big planes don't respond fast enough for last second changes in flight paths.

It was his first flight into SFO as a Captain.. Pilots usually do a shit load of simulations, but simulators are not the same as real life..

From the discussion they had it was a CO-PILOT ( hence probably a First Officer ) training the Captain and not the Official Captain ( as a Co-Pilot ) training the Captain on this new 777 into SFO..

Big jet engines take a while to spool up...its not like hitting the gas pedal in the car...problem number one.
Even if they did would still be asking alot to accelerate an appreciable amount in short time.
Descending accelerates you...so to go from a descend to climb and accelerate is asking alot/
Pilot error?
You bet as long as there was nothing wrong with the plane....That also includes if the electronics had control of the plane...you take control if things are not going as they should {rate of decent and speed}

The fact they stated they were going to go around and try again is what you do if you dont feel you arent lined up proper or are over shooting.
An over shoot is an embarrassment and could be that they tried to hard to use the full length of the runway.

Did they just slam the tail down or hit something before the runway?
