To me, heroes are people who risk their lives to help or save others. So if a teacher works in a dangerous, inner city school, putting their safety on the line so they can make a difference is heroic.

However, teachers who work in safe schools such as the high school I attended where serious crimes are the exception to the rule are not heroes. I give these good teachers credit for trying to help. But their not quite heroes to me.

What is with you and teachers? This is the second thread at least I know of where you have focused on teachers. Are you or were you a teacher? Are you dating a teacher or did one recently stop dating you? Why the interest?

a teacher can be but no teachers are not because not all teachers have the ability or agenda to help make people smarter and happier

I think that's a pretty loose definition of a hero.

For me, a hero is someone who say, runs into a burning building or dives into an ocean to try and save someone else. Someone who is literally making the split second decision to risk their life.

Being a teacher, whilst a good career choice and something that helps others, isn't what I'd define as a heroic action. I'd imagine some of those people in difficult areas teach there because they live there, or can't get a better job elsewhere in a safer neighbourhood. If the definition of a hero is that you might end up in a dangerous situation, possibly, one day, in your line of work, then hell, that could apply to anyone who works with the public.

the term hero is broad and saying teachers are heros is broad but anyone can be a hero but not everyone is a hero

Ya, the definition of hero kinda just says "someone of character who commits heroic acts" ummm circular definition much? So I agree with Kyle.

I also agree with Kyle, you can have a teacher who is a hero and a fireman who's not imo, it's the person not the job that makes the hero

The word 'hero' is used too much these days. Someone who doesn't risk their life to save another is not a hero, even though teachers who work in safe schools, sports stars, and others are called 'heroes.'

The definition of a hero is different for each person.

Watch yourself, son. I don't TRY to help. I DO help. :p

Get 'im!!!

I think there's only a handful of things in this world more important than molding children into viable adults. Does it make teachers heroes??? I don't know. Does it make them important??? ABSOLUTELY!!!

I have to agree that "HERO" has different meanings to different people.
To almost all, that guy who ran into a house on fire to pull out a couple people....that's a hero.
To few, that teacher who worked her hardest to help that one child struggling, leaning towards being violent, took the time to listen and help them succeed is a hero.
No one person can tell another who can or can't be a hero to them.

The vast majority of teachers don't go around telling others that those in their profession are heroes. But I think teachers who regard themselves as heroes and make the rest of us hear about it are self-absorbed.

To me, their profession isn't anymore special than other professions, so I wish they'd get over themselves. I'm tired of hearing how great teachers think they are and how they should get paid more in poor communities such as my hometown.
