They are less popular as they don't work with a streaming format and American tastes have shifted in the last 20 years as a result of increased streaming options like Netflix

Yes, it's losing its appeal and the reason is not far fetched. It’s because new sitcoms lack that special essence which made classic sitcoms so appealing like having memorable characters and excellent storytelling. The modern shows with their interesting characters and humor cannot match the traditional sitcoms.
