Just wondering what you did and where you got your info from? As most of yall know, I have been planning on opening a cafe very soon. I need some info on where to get some of the documents if I can on the internet. I have searched google, but I am not sure I am looking it up right. I am looking for the inspections code for restuaruants. Also, do yall know of any placed that show sample small business plans? I found a few but they are targeted towards the bigger businesses.

Check on the city's website, probably in the engineering department page. When I worked for the city in the engineering department we had all the ordinances available for download. If not then stop by the engineering department, or development department. Whoever is in charge of ordinances.

isnt there a "small business for dummies" book available? if there is, go to Barnes & Noble and pick one up. it SHOULD tell you everything you need to know about starting up a business.

bdn, that would be generalized for everywhere, and everywhere isnt the same as everywhere else.. :dunno

i have a business idea as well, but it takes much more well, i cant tell you now can it :D

but yeah, like ouz said, check online with the city, and if not, stop by the city hall or something like that. might have to go to county, which may be some ways away like mine ( about 30 mins from my house )

also, have you finalized a name, or is there still options / top picks with that?

the name is very important. my dad is the marketing manager out at Club Car (he led the design team from E-Z-GO to build the first Caryall Club Car maintenance vehicles in the late 80s) and he is planning on opening his own busniess one day. book stores do have business books, but i wouldnt trust them for a cafe. the top three things to keep in mind are location, location, location. the rest will work itself out. are you going to manage yourself or hire a complete staff and just own it?

pick a name and location then go with city officials from there on building inspections, fire code, safety hazards, cleaning hazards.... etc. the food business has some downs in having to be completely perfectly neat and free of germs 24/7, but the food business has one of the highest returns, even up there with real estate.

good luck V!

im gonna go up there today if I wake up in time. If not, I will hit them up on my next day off.

Body, I have books, but my problem is finding the information i need. I know what I am doing, but I was hoping there was a way I could skip going down to the city hall for this info. I cant find it on the city website, or state for that matter. :(

First and foremost you must get a business license to operate any retail or restraunt establishment. what I did was to find the spot and then fill out a lease agreement with the Leaser. Then go to the city and apply for a license.
For a Restraunt you will have to apply for all sorts of permits. I'm not the expert on Restraunts so I suggest you find out what it takes to get a food server license(Heath permits and inspections) and a liquor license.

Sometimes you can get help from the Govt. for starting small businesses but you have to wade thru a whole bunch of Bullshit paperwork. Then they will set you up with a consultant (usually a retired bussiness type person) who will help you with your business plan of action. The plus side of getting a small business loan from the Fed. Govt. is that you can get a whole lot of cash and not have to pay it back for a long time plus if you fail in your business then you can ask the Govt. to forgive your debt.

I have friends that own a Race track Gas station and they work there Asses off but they cleared over 300,000. dollars in profit last year.
I also have a buddy that owms a Drivers Ed school. He works his Ass off too but he cleared over 500,000. dollars last year. It's possible to make some dough so don't be discouraged by obstacles that get in your way. :D

I'm to lazy to work that hard anymore so I got a Govt. job. :D

A restraunt is alot of work and 1 out 10 don't make it 5 years. I would say don't and say that you did.

If you must start a business, Go cheap with everything and keep you monthly bills down. If you can't pay cash for it, don't get it. If you have to sign a contract (like a cell phone), Think about if you really need it. That is a bill you have to come up with every month if you make money or not.

that was really negitive. LOL I have dreamed of this cafe since I was little. I want to make it work. Its gonna be hard work, but I know what I am getting into. I want to make this dream come true. I know it if I market it right, then it will be great. I will invite you all to the opening. :)

Sorry, Just plan on it not doing well and you will do just fine. If you don't have to have it to live on, you might make it. Start small and grow and do it with you your money, not the banks.
