  • Housing crisis: He wants to work towards setting up a system of negotiation between banks and borrowers to help keep their homes.
  • Energy: With oil prices dropping in recent weeks, he acknowledges "it may be a little harder politically" to enact measures to lessen US dependence on foreign energy.
  • Economy: His first legislative priority will be to get another stimulus package passed.
  • Combating terrorism: Putting a national security team in place as soon as possible will be one of Mr Obama's top priorities.
  • Al-Qaeda: His top priority will be to stamp out Al-Qaeda.
  • Guantanamo Bay: He will shut down the internment camp in Cuba.
  • Iraq and Afghanistan: He will not retreat from his vow to begin pulling out troops from Iraq and switch focus to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan could see 30,000 new US troops

Associated Press, 12.20.08, 11:50 AM EST

The top U.S. military officer says that up to 30,000 new American troops could be sent to Afghanistan next year.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said on a visit to Kabul that between 20,000 and 30,000 additional U.S. troops could be sent to Afghanistan by summer.
U.S. commanders have long requested an additional 20,000 troops to bolster the 31,000 U.S. forces already in the country. But the high end of Mullen's range - 30,000 additional forces - is the largest number any top U.S. military official has said publicly.
Mullen says that after those troops are added, only improvements in Afghanistan's governance and economic situation will affect the strength of the insurgency.

That word "plans" is such a generic term. Anyone can make "plans", but its kinda like a "pledge", its never really a done deal until its followed thorough and actually done. Usually when I hear someone say that they are planning something (especially when they are planning a LOT of things), not much happens:p
Now the other word Obama uses a lot, "Change", that I"m looking forward to. He isn't even in office yet and he's shaking things up by picking Rick Warren to open in prayer at the inaugriation. He's showing that he is trying to mix things up and not just go to the far left, but kinda in the middle.

  • Housing crisis: He wants to work towards setting up a system of negotiation between banks and borrowers to help keep their homes.
    • That mechanism already exists. He's gonna set up some kind of federally-mandated thing??
  • Energy: With oil prices dropping in recent weeks, he acknowledges "it may be a little harder politically" to enact measures to lessen US dependence on foreign energy.
    • If that's what he wants to do, he needs to change from an enviromentalist approach to a national security or cheaper energy approach.
  • Economy: His first legislative priority will be to get another stimulus package passed.
    • God help us. :( He needs to focus on doing the job of our federal gov't. That's what will stimulate the economy. Meddling in the markets will only delay investment, imo.
  • Combating terrorism: Putting a national security team in place as soon as possible will be one of Mr Obama's top priorities.
    • What does that mean?
  • Al-Qaeda: His top priority will be to stamp out Al-Qaeda.
    • His top priority will be the domestic economy.
  • Guantanamo Bay: He will shut down the internment camp in Cuba.
    • And move the prisoners somewhere else? Back to where they were captured, perhaps?
  • Iraq and Afghanistan: He will not retreat from his vow to begin pulling out troops from Iraq and switch focus to Afghanistan.
    • Logical and sensible now. He got lucky on that one.

Action speaks louder than words. We don't want any NATO (no action talk only) people.

Excellent and accurate point. As I understand it, Mr. President-Elect wishes to return some ungodly number of billions to the tax paying public (yes another stimulus package) on the theory they will spend it thus boosting the economy. Sound familiar to anyone? Didn't work then won't work now. How about just targeting tax relief and making that permanent.

  • Means he will, have his "team" in place. Doesn't mean they know shit from shinnola but they will be in place. ;)

Just means we will be killing them on the battle fields in Afghanistan.
