If you're willing to move to Colorado and work for $7.50 - $8.50 per hour and no benefits.

It's no wonder they can't fill a few positions. I'm thinking they should be ashamed of themselves for offering a wage that nobody could survive on.

Just so ya'll don't think I'm bashing the USA I would say the exact same thing if I saw it happening in Canada.

Things have definitely changed here in the good ole U. S. of A.

I make a good wage.... but without two incomes... it wouldn't work very well with what I have become accustomed to having. I don't live beyond my means. I don't buy a bunch of 'toys' and I could care less what the neighbors have that I don't.

My wage has been frozen..... I pay more for my benefits and the benefits have changed where I now have a deductible and copays.... At least I still have insurance. Some people don't because of the cost.

..... however ...... If I had a need to get a job.... and nothing but the Colorado job was available.... I'd apply.

It's better than nothing at all.

Perhaps - to keep from starving, but they pay zero benefits, so workers best not get sick. But a pretty sad state of affairs for the so-called most affluent nation on the planet. It's bound to reach critical mass sooner or later. We are seeing the beginnings of this critical mass with the Occupy Wall Street movement going on aroung the U.S. and the world.

I didn't say it was what we deserve. I just said it's better than nothing. Had I been offered a job paying minimum wage when I was unemployed for almost two years I would have taken it and been happier than hell.

I know Anita - I wasn't challenging what you posted. It just reminded me of how bad things have gotten and what people have to do just to survive. It also reminded me of how wide the gap between rich and poor is becoming here. :(

It is sad for sure.

What's crazy to me is that the Sheriff's Department in Bibb County starts out paying like $12 per hour. The crime rate is something like 9th highest for violent crimes for cities of similar size. No way I would put my life on the line every day for $12 an hour when you can sit in dispatch in MY county and make more than a dollar more an hour STARTING OUT.

About every 8 weeks or so I take a pile of pop cans and assorted bottles to the Return It Depot and while I'm there doing my thing at least 1 or 2 " street people " show up with sacks full of stuff. Knowing what I get for my stuff I would venture a guess that many of them can make a decent buck hunting for returnables so why the hell would any one of them be encouraged to apply for a job with those wages.

It's been over 30 years since I worked for those type of wages and the only way I would grace an employer with my presence for that kind of " reward " is if my Unemployment Insurance ran out and I used all my savings. The only reason I say that is because if a person takes the job and it is full time ie: 8 hours per day, it cuts their availability down to almost nothing as far as being able to look for a job paying a decent wage. It's kinda of a catch 22 position imo.

Since I've read the story ( yesterday ) and reread it a few times today I can't see how anyone has the nerve to even offer that sort of pay other than preying on the desperate.

When I was long hauling ( over 12 years ago ) and I had my arse parked in a restaurant in the USA with some time to kill I used to browse through the help wanted ads just for shits and giggles. I was always amazed at the poor wages that were offered all over your country in comparison to ours. One thing that struck me was other than the Chicago, Gary, Ind and Detroit area the further south a person went the lower the wages were.

**** Now I know why people are pissed and are hanging out in New York. ****

...... aren't things more expensive in Canada for us Americans? ;)

That's all relative..

If our dollar is low compared to yours, it makes it much more cheaper for you to buy here..

When our dollar rises, as it has recently, it makes it much more expensive..

So I guess it all depends..

It also depends on what.. And even within the country that varies.. So its hard to say but than again I think that's the same in the States..

I've priced things over there regardless of the exchange. Cheaper over here. Which is why on the weekends and/or holidays I see loads of Canadians downtown in my area.

I have to agree with you. It makes sense considering you have 10 x the population that we have. That along with us being taxed to death is what makes it so expensive here.

Yep! I bought some things and actually got some sort of tax back at the border. :)

I did stay on the Canadian side when I spent a couple of nights in Niagara Falls a couple of years back. Got a great deal at the time cause Canada wants American's moolah. LOL!

Somethings are controlled here.. Dairy ( milk, eggs, cheese ) and the price is crazy can make it worth while if your close to the border.. Gas is really high at $5.00 a gallon in my area so it would be worth crossing over but I can't stand the 1 1/2 to 2 hrs line ups.. Other things are just not sold here and that would be why people cross over..

But to save 5% and drive 50 to 100 miles to get something worth $35.00 is just not worth it today.. I calculate anything below $250.00 as throw away and not worth the drive. It also doesn't make sense if I buy something worth $3000.00 to have to declare it at customs and pay added taxes and import duties because it is sold here.. Plus if something goes wrong with it, your warrantee is void unless you go back into the US to get it fixed..

So yes, it I go on business and have an extra day I might look for something but I know what limit I can bring back.

There are special classes of items that can make it worth crossing like Collectors items.

But for the common folk it really never really pans out although some believe it does.. It's all semantics..
