A Van Buren AR county woman is behind bars for allegedly running a puppy mill out of her home. This is the second time in less than two years authorities have rescued over 200 animals from her property. Most of the 201 dogs and cats are safe at the Van Buren County Animal Shelter. But it took all of Wednesday night and most of Thursday to transport the animals to safety. Now their owner, Gloria Jean Crawford, is behind bars awaiting charges. "Outside pens had a lot of feces, a lot of animals live inside the barn area. It too had a lot of feces in there. I did go inside the building and it was hideous, "describes animal control officer, Deborah Fogle, "Very inhumane conditions." But Crawford tells authorities she has done nothing wrong. In fact, this is not the first time her property has been confiscated. "The only difference between now and the last time the kennels weren't stacked on top of each other," explains Fogle. Last time Crawford did not serve any jail time. She was ordered to seek counseling, but according to Fogle there were no stipulations to keep her from handling or breeding dogs. Fogle hopes to change that this go around, "Right now we're looking at 201 counts of animal cruelty, second offense. She is still under court order from the first time." But for the time being the shelter is over capacity and needs your help. They're in desperate need of laundry soap, bleach, towels, dog food, puppy food, cat litter, bowls for dog food (not easy to chew through), all purpose cleaner with bleach, and sodas and water for the volunteers working around the clock.
