There's no way they DON"T exist. Think about how many planets are out there. We're such an inconsequential speck in the entire universe. Surely we aren't the only life form out there. There has to be something more. We just haven't found it. Maybe we aren't supposed to.
The same reasoning could be used to explain the existence of other phenomenon that we don't have proof of...God, for example. I can see your common-sense approach seems to make sense, but non-believers want more than that to explain that aliens are out there.
