Sure it's pork barrel spending. I don't see any appreciable difference between the Dems & Repubs. Every decision, imo absolutely everything they do, is made through filters focused purely on personal political gain. It's systemic.

And here is the quandary IMO with the United States...those who complain about our elected officials can become exactly like them when given power.

I have no doubt that some good men run for political office, and perhaps even get elected, but somehow they always seem to be beaten into submission having to play the political game and become different men after time.

I'm just at the point now were I think we need term limits and the days of career politicians should be over.

When I see the democrats and republicans on TV now fighting over the debt, sometimes I think the French had a good handle on it in the past on how to deal with those in power

Tell me what that has to do with the our ridiculous national debt. Unless you're saying that we could solve our problems by simply increasing the taxation on gasoline (which is the lowest in the Western world).

That being said, by my rough calculation, I paid a little under $1/liter ($3.69/gal) when I filled up last week.

We likely pay the same per gallon that you pay per litre. England taxes the heck out of gasoline to discourage driving. We have lots more acreage over here so driving makes more sense than riding a bus, in most circumstances. We also don't have to prove we have a place to park as a prerequisite to buying a car, as I understand is required in England.

Anyway, I don't really see the connection, but I did my best to answer your question.

The US has some of the cheapest gas around, for sure, but it would certainly kill all sorts of productivity to raise gas tax without any viable means of public transportation.
