What is broiling? I keep coming across it in Stephen King books and I don't understand what it is. I gather it's some way of cooking food?

There's probably a different term for it in the UK but I honestly can't work out what broiling is, so I can't even think of a British-English word for it.

Broiling is more than just grilling, though grilling is a form of broiling.

broil 1 (broil)
v. broiled, broil·ing, broils
v.tr. 1. To cook by direct radiant heat, as over a grill or under an electric element.
2. To expose to great heat.

v.intr. To be exposed to great heat.

use the top part of the oven (no, not the counter top where you fry) get that sucker as hot as you can and start cooking!

I have a machine for mine :surrender

Though the few times I've made them without it, I've always fried both sides in a frying pan.

I have a machine too but I mean the open ones with just one slice of bread and cheese on top, though your frying idea sounds delicious I have to say!
