Round Rock, TX -- Police in this Austin suburb were stumped for hours by the 49 emergency calls that kept coming in from an unregistered cell phone. The caller would say nothing before hanging up, sometimes after a brief giggle. Eventually, though, police found their man, er child: a 7-year-old calling from his elementary school classroom just for kicks.

"He was just doing it for fun because he had a cell phone," said Eric Poteet, spokesman for the Round Rock police "The only number that would work was 911."

The phone had been deactivated. Because the phone had no account attached to it during the Nov. 14 calling spree, dispatchers couldn't pinpoint where the calls came from. Instead, they used cell phone relay towers to define an approximate area, Poteet said.

During one of the calls, dispatchers heard classroom chatter in the background and decided to check out the elementary school. Once they found the boy, the officers confiscated the phone and called his parents, Poteet said.

I hope he got a stern talking to about how many people could have suffered while waiting for an emergency service because they were wasting time dealing with his stupid prank.

...and at the end of the article it says, "because of the boy's age he won't be charged." Now, though, are his parents going to laugh this off as just a childhood prank? Or will they actually take their son's actions seriously and perhaps reflect on other things he's done lately that may be a little bit out of the ordinary?

Will the parents have to pay the fines usually imposed on people who do this? Or will they just say to their son, "Just don't do it again, okay?" "Okay Mommy. Okay, Daddy." Then the boy, seeing as he knows he can get away with serious "pranks" because of his age, will see what else he can do, without any consequences befalling him. Maybe not, but I would be somewhat wary at this stage.

God That is the MOST freaking annoying thing to deal with. We had the same thing happen here, but they were calling from their resn on their cellphone that was disconnected. Well, The told us that they stay in trouble at school and their first name... we called the school resourse officer and he told us immediately who it was and her address. We found her and she had a GOOD talking to... needless to say, she was in big trouble. not only did she call and harrass us, she told us to suck her dick, go fuck ourselves, ect. That chick pissed me off. By the way it was a combined 3 days straight that she called us before we could gather all the info and peice all of the little information that we had together.

Wow, I guess I'm lucky too, I have a cell-phone. Who DOESN'T have a cell-phone these days?

I'd beat the shit outta those kids. Sure, I'm not innocent, I called 911 to "just say hi" once or twice(Litterally, only once or twice!), but I was like, 3, you can't pin that shit on me. I didn't call them 49 TIMES. With a cell-phone that they couldn't trace nonetheless. I had basic reasoning behind my calls, I didn't know what it was for, and I was just trying to make their day a lot better!! V, you can't tell me if I called 911 just to say hi to you, you wouldn't take that as a compliment! Women love it when you do that ^_^

Not at 911! That PRANK 911 call could take seconds away from someone that actually needs our assistance.

Ugh, fine. What's your house number :D Haha, no. That is very messed up though, to call 49 times and hang up. That could have used up valuable time to save somebody's life.

Yes, V, feel special. I'd actually call you just to say hi. I'm that stupid :D

The parents will probably do nothing about it either. Here's an idea: grow a pair and stomp that little shits ass.

How busy does your call center get V? Is there ever a time when you guys are just so swamped there is a wait?

The last two times I've called 911 (once for a drunk driver, and once to report a drunk), I got put on hold long enough for me to just hang up. :wtf:

We get on average 500 calls a day. There are days (weekends) that we get way more. Theres normally not much of a wait. We are required to answer the phone before the 2nd ring. When we are busy w/ an accident and their are 50 people calling it in, sometimes we cant answer them all, but we have their numbers and we call them back immediately. Thats only happened a few times in the last 2 years since I have been there.

But since you live in san diego, Im sure they get WAY more calls then us.
