The biggest thing I hate is watching pro wrestling with non-fans and them saying "You do know it's not real right?". Of course I do, that doesn't actually stop me watching it. It's kinda the same thing as watching a soap opera, the characters in a soap opera aren't real, they are played by real people yes, but the actual characters are made up by the makers of that soap opera. And pro wrestling is the same. The difference is sometimes wrestlers do hurt themselves in the ring, many injuries suffered over the years. You work by thumb really, the acting isn't real, it's scripted. The matches are choreographed move for move, but when it goes wrong they get hurt. Good article.

Exactly, good post.

It's just live theatre, ultimately. A mixture of sport and entertainment, but the thrill that good wrestlers can give is hard to match. The Attitude Era was so amazing that I've actually gone back and downloaded every Raw and Nitro from like 96 - 2001, and me and a friend are going through it again. It's going to take forever but it was such a great time. I don't watch WWE a lot these days, because the PG-TV shit was ruining it, but it's nice to see the Rock and Austin back. I know Austin can't do as much as he used to but it's still awesome seeing him.

I hate that people don't give pro-wrestlers respect, they're some of the toughest people on the planet. Not saying they could beat up trained fighters, but these guys can take a hell of a beating.

Wrestling fans know that pro-wrestling is "fake." The only time I ever thought some of it might be real (not the fighting, but the story) was during the NWO invasion. It was done so perfectly you kinda wondered for a little bit. I was also a lot younger then. Not to mention that sometimes real personal feuds get put on display for the world to see, in form of storylines, and these wrestlers -- who are on the road constantly, putting their bodies through hell -- get absolutely no respect from certain people.

Being into MMA, I see this a lot as well. I love both.

You know, in theory being "fake" helps wrestling. Because they can book it, they can make sure such a main event on a PPV gets half an hour. And this is one advantage it has over MMA and boxing, because if you pay for a boxing fight, sure you have the undercard, but absolutely nobody buys a boxing event for the undercard, it's the main event, anyway if the main lasts 37 seconds and it's over, you can't complain to the PPV company that you bought the fight from because it only lasted 37 seconds because they'd turn round and say "It's not our fault it lasted 37 seconds", and they are 100% right. In pro wrestling if you buy a PPV, you know the PPV will got nearly 3 hours, regardless. Now sure sometimes a match might have to end early (last example off the top of my head would be Orton vs Edge last year) due to an injury and another match might have to go longer, but it's done. Now if you didn't like the PPV you can't get your money back because again it isn't the company's fault.

Just because a fight ends quickly doesn't make it a bad fight, nobody likes to see a shitty fight go on for a half an hour, people want to see finishes.

No I'm not saying it's a bad fight, I'm just saying some people might be disappointed that it was over after 37 seconds. I mean sometimes it's obvious a fight won't last long, everyone in the free world could see that David Haye vs Audley Harrison was only lasting a couple of rounds, even Audley Harrison knew it. Let's say you pay for this fight where this 7 foot 300 pound Russian called Ivan who's just got out of prison for beating this other guy to death and is dying to fight someone fights this 120 pound when wet Frenchman called Pierre who paints teapots for a living and who couldn't throw a proper punch if you gave him $500. it wouldn't even last 10 seconds. It might be an entertaining 10 seconds, but it's 10 seconds none the less. Also I know boxing has weight divisions, I was merely using a hypothetical.

I'd also rather see a knockout than a points decision too.

lol at your Russian Prisoner Vs Pierre the Teapot trainer scenario, I wish they still put on fights like that :24:

But anyways I have all the respect in the world for professional wrestlers, I don't think any other athletes devote as much of their time as they do to their jobs, they're on the road constantly, there is no off season and they are constantly abusing their bodies to put on shows for their fans.

I love Cracked, I read that article and I don't even watch wrestling :)

I didn't know about the whole 'stay in character at all times' deal. I can see why they do it but what a commitment.

I actually read that article the other day. I was gonna post it, but as per the usual... I got distracted and then forgot. :24:

Really good read though.
