Dialup - you'll need to dial up modems, one in each computer.

broadband - one modem hooked into the router, both computers hooked into the router and/or a wireless LAN card on your network card on your desktop(s).

Linksys routers are 50-60 bucks. good investment, DLink is good too but the interface to program is slightly harder to navigate through.

sorry i been away..i got cox cable .so what do i need...also , we can use both of them at the same time? i dont know if i need 2 modems? or a long plug cord that gose in to the puter.mines got 3 things plugged in it ,,cable wire,,power cord,,and the one that looks like a big phone plug.. thanks G.,,whats a routter.?

whats the differance?dsl stands for what? i got a black thing that a cable wire goes into ? its not dail up, i think he mrs. got midemum speed something. i dont know bout puters good as you might know by this post. i got me new set up , was going to give wife old one i had , so i dont have to beat her all the time. .just tell me if you more info! sorry ...G.

Ok.

You have a cable modem, you have Comcast don't you?

Here's what you do.

Your cable modem (it'll vary in size/color, etc):




See the orange cord? That'll be your CAT5 straight through cable... from the jack thats on the back of your modem... you need a router:

That cable goes into the back of that.. There will be a jack that says "Internet" on it.

The computers you have need to be plugged into any one of the other four jacks back there.

thanks james , a router cost 50 /60 bucks you say. comcast you said?don't know what that is.mine looks like one above .the top one thats the cable cord? so i need a big wire that will run to the other puter to the routter.like run wire up in attic . right? thanks G

Have you called your internet provider yet? You should already have a cable in the house coming out of the wall, but you'll need to call a provider to get the service.

Then they should install and test the modem for you.

From there, you should hook the cat5 into the router. etc.
