Somehow that doesnt surprise me.I mean that well the routines of military life are pretty hard to find once you leave the military by all accounts so some are bound to find settling into civilian life very difficult,add the fact that they are equipped for surviving out in the elements then its something that would hold no fear for them like it would for many others,they are also trained in self defence so can look after themselves on the streets too.All of this makes the choice to have to live on the streets all the easier as they know they can deal with it all.
I think it's a damn shame that in America we have 3/4 million homeless people.
I remember having discussions about the number of homeless in America and there were many times that I heard the argument that America is the land of opportunity and there is no reason for people to be homeless. That they need to stop being lazy, pull themselves up by their boot-straps and find some work.
So by that logic, are they saying that these homeless troops are lazy?
I think that the problem is more dynamic than that. But whatever the reason for the number of homeless, it's just a shame that we have so many.

True, but it's still incredibly sad that they have to resort to that.
Yep, 11% of our population are veterans. And 25% of that 11% are homeless. 50% of our homeless suffer from some type of mental illness. Only about 5% are addicts and folks that don't want to work believe it or not.

PTSD is some scary stuff.
I had PTSD over a situation in my life approx. 9 years ago. It was horrible and totally jacked my life for a span of 2 years.
Yes I know... but we are allowing them to end up on the streets. It would be nice to see better treatment for people with mental illness.
It's just about doing the right thing... it doesn't matter if they are vets or not. As a civilized society, it's our responsibility to take care of those that cannot care for themselves.

I hear that the military gives alot of their vets the shaft when they leave. Can anyone confirm this?
Nowadays, I don't think that's true. I think it happened a lot in the past.

I saw this one news special on this marine that got his legs blown off, so they had to fly him in a C-130 (is that right?) to a German hospital from Iraq. After he recovered and went back state side, they sent him a damn bill for the plane ride! They also stuck him with a ridiculous bill that was like, $100,000 all together.

I heard that same story, except it was a civilian contractor. Makes me wonder if it's true and it's happened a lot, or if it's some kind of urban legend...
