Should College Education Be Free for Everyone?

Our country is going into elections and a lot of political parties are promising free education. It sounds nice but the question is whether a developing country like ours can financially sustain it.
My belief is free college education would devalue a college degree. We have seen our free public education system in America become devalued because teachers are not allowed to hold students accountable to learn. Many with high school diplomas cannot read at a 5th grade level. Our education system is not what it once was.
