Just curious...when you get your surgery and then able to hear....what's the first kind of sound that you would love to hear? I mean do you want to hear music playing for the first time, the sound of your own voice, someone elses voice etc?
I have not had any real counseling yet but I will once I get to hear. As far as associating sounds, that varies with each person. I have a friend who went through a similar thing a year ago and she still gets disoriented.Have you had some sort of counseling? Maybe that's the wrong term. Like do they tell you to expect to be overwhelmed at first? For instance, we are used to sounds around us all the time and don't even notice them: the clock ticking, the furnace blowing, the noises the house makes, the mailman driving his route, etc. But for you, everything will be new and unexplained. How long do they say it will take before you'll be able to associate the sound with what makes the sound?
To be honest I am scared about it. I am more afraid of hearing than I was about the implant surgery last month.

The plus side is when I get overwhelmed I can simply turn it off.
Rest assured I will be watching Star Trek and Star Wars with the sound.phaser fire and particle weapons, that's the first thing that comes to mind when i think of you hearing things for the first time.
Thank you much.Aww Gina. Don't be afraid, girl! (Although me saying that is certainly not going to help you since you've lived in a non-sound world your entire life.) Very few people get the opportunity to have such a profound change in their life. You're like a warrior, going from the extreme of soundlessness to the incredible world of life that speaks to you. I am imagining that it may be hard to transfer from learning about the world through lip-reading and sign language to relying on sound to communicate to you. But wow Gina....just wait 'til you hear what you're missing. You'll love it.![]()
I already have a list but I would welcome much more.we need to send gina a list of songs to listen to!!! i am interested to see what her musical taste will be like!
The surgery is already done. I just have to wait until it heals before I get the implant activated and adjusted. I see the doctor again this week for a check up and I think a date will be set as to when that will happen. It will be before the end of the month I am sure.Gives a whole new meaning to tuning stuff out. Im sure it will be a very memorable time after the surgery is done and the such.
