Off Monday?

Its Columbus day on Monday right? I havnt heard that my boys are off from school....isnt this some big holiday?

I can guess what Columbus day is about but is there certain things you do to celebrate it?

Some people have bbq's... but I dont do anything else to celebrate it.

I remember when being in New Jersey they had off on Columbus day. hmmm.... Thanks people.

Yeah my bank is closed, but I have to work.

I work and the schools here are open tomorrow, though there's a inservice day the next week.

Aha, so that Columbus day you have, is what we would call a Bank Holiday here.

Yr week the kids have off school that you call fall week, we call it half-term week (end of October and then one half-term week in February) and the week they have end of May, beginning of June is called Whitsun week.

Yr inservice day, we call it inset day (the school has a few of those per school year).

Well you can count on one thing when working retail. When most people are off..you are not. Therefore. I am not.

Some schools in our area alternate with Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. One year kids will have off Columbus Day; the next year they'll have off MLK, Jr's birthday. Some schools have just completely gotten rid of a day off for Columbus.

My daughter goes to school Monday.

I always wondered about the way historians use the word "discover." How can you discover something that's already there and has been for 100s/1000s of years?! :confused

I think the difference is that the Vikings got there, but that doesn't mean they discovered it, if you understand the difference.
