Ironically enough, no one here (even the anti gunners) seemed to catch the murder suicide of a 3 member family in Massachusetts last week.

Hard to believe it, but the murder suicide I spoke about was accomplished with a semi auto handgun that only held 10 rounds.

It's quite tragic what happened at the Sikh Temple, especially considering how peaceful Sikh's are.

I have a few guesses why this is washing over the public.

1. I bet a lot of people in the US don't know Sikhs aren't Muslims. That's probably embarrassing and awkward, as it aligns a person with the shooter.

2. Probably a good deal of racism, misguided terrorist repulse, or bigotry of another kind...

3. In general, I think humans relate to people like themselves much easier than groups they know little about. Most of us could relate to being in a movie theater with your friends and family. Fewer of us can relate to worshiping in a Sikh temple.

Pretty dead on... My mom didn't say Sikh or Muslim, she simply called then Indian... I'm probably certain she prob doesn't know the difference either and to be honest the only reason I know is because of shows like Bizarre Foods who actually went to India. Both incidents are tragic but I was pretty indifferent emotion wise. I was a tad appalled at a bit of bigotry but thats my family.

Snarkiness aside, a single handgun is less spectacular than two handguns, a shotgun, and an assault rifle with 100-round clip.

interesting that an American would equate weapons with spectacular, those of us in societies with less emphahsis on arms might look to numbers of dead, motives, etc etc

Semi auto only refers to the operation of the weapon in question. A semi auto weapon could either be a handgun OR rifle. Usually non semi auto handguns are revolvers.
