Look at this analysis and see if Zimmerman's version of events actually makes sense:

According to the 9-11 Tapes Zimmerman encountered Trayvon somewhere outside the gated community, somewhere along this path.

At some point Zimmerman claims "he went in through the back gate" and "I lost him". Logic indicates that that probably occurred this way.

The next part is most intersting, Trayvon is inside the gate, Zimmerman is outside and in order to catch up he has to drive in by "The Clubhouse". That means he did this.

Pretty amazing eh? Just imagine how fast he must have been driving to cover all that distance. What happens next is even more amazing... Trayvon has an increasing lead on him so he has to jump out of his car and RUN - which you can hear on the 9-11 tape as the car "dings" when he gets out then he grows out of breath as he chases.
So that leads us to this, and the final confrontation.

I'm accounting here, slightly, for the fact that Trayvon had a head start after entering the gate - but Look how much further Zimmerman had to have traveled on foot in order to catch up!
What he and his family would like for us to believe is something more like this.... which would mean that Trayvon was even further ahead, and decided to double-back for some reason when he's been retreating this entire time.

Of course, there's no evidence of the "doubling-back" based on the sworn statement by his girlfriend - but wait it gets worse. Zimmerman's claim is that Trayvon "Cold Cocked" him. That means he hit him from behind before getting him on the ground, that would mean that after chasing all this distance, Zimmerman turned around too. Something like this.
.

So after all this mad-dash driving to catch up, all this running - we're supposed to buy the idea that Zimmerman just quit, then suddenly Trayvon - who'd been leaving this entire time and was almost home - decided to turn around and chase Zimmerman? Then supposedly he got on top of George, had him immobilized - smashing his head against the concrete - even though on the video he doesn't look injured, doesn't have a bloody nose, doesn't have visible lacerations or bleeding on the back of his head and doesn't have visible grass stains on his jacket.
And we're supposed to believe Trayvon was the aggressor here?
It's just plain patently ridiculous.

10:43 AM PT: Another thought brought up in the comments is that Zimmerman, being familiar with the layout of the neighborhood, took a short-cut by going between the buildings and confronted Trayvon this way.

.........................
That is different from the claim made by the MSNBC Correspondent who toured the scene, but let's take that up as a possibility. If this happened then they met each other face-to-face, and Zimmy's claim that "Trayvon came up behind him, while he was headed back to his car" - still doesn't make sense. His car is on the other side of the buildings, no matter whether he parked further north on the street or not. If he cut through between the buildings and reached the walkway either Trayvon was walking toward him, or walking away after having passed that point.
Why exactly would Zimmerman then decide to walk the long way around back to his car, unless he didn't know Trayvon had already gone by and was actually still looking for him? Why would Trayvon, now this much further down the lane and much closer to home while he was as scared his girlfriend describes - turn around and go back into danger?
In either of the logical scenarios, Zimmerman comes up from behind Trayvon, or he cuts him off and confronts him from the front - unless they both put their left foot out, then their right foot in and starting doing "The TimeWarp", there's no logical way that Trayvon came up from behind Zimmerman as they both reached that particular position halfway between the buildings.
This exaggeration/lie seems to be part of a pattern, and is very obvious in a shame-based person who'se trying to avoid the truth and responsibility. Every place where he's potentially culpable or liable for his actions - he blames Trayvon for it. He didn't come up behind Trayvon, Trayvon come up from behind him. He wasn't on top during their struggle - Trayvon was on top of him.
But that leads us to another scenario that doesn't work. If Zimmerman's gun was in his waist band, and Trayvon was on top of him, knees on his arms as both Zimmerman's father and brother describe - how did he see or reach the gun that was at that point Behind Him?
If Zimmerman grabbed his gun from this position, he would have shot Trayvon in the back. Logic dictates that didn't happen.
What could have happened is that Zimmerman was on Top, and Trayvon was under him. In that position Zimmerman's gun would have been practically in his face. He might have reached for it, Zimmerman might have fought back - legitimately fearing for his life if Trayvon got his gun - desperately grabbed it away from Trayvon and fired.
To me that's the most likely possibility. It might, even, just barely fit within the definition of "Stand your ground", but in order to reach this position Zimmerman has to admit all of his previous wrong and grievous actions - ignoring the order to not follow Trayvon, attacking him (trying to take his cell-phone?) etc - that led us exactly to this place. He's simply not man enough to do that, so we get this fantastical bullshit story.
11:47 AM PT: Update correcting the position of the Gates (Back Gate is One Block North of where I thought) This also shows direction to the 7-11 and initial point where Zimmerman spotted Martin. There are two scenarios a) where Trayvon went the long way around and between the buildings to evade Zimmerman, and B) where Zimmerman cuts between the buildings to get ahead of Trayvon.
