and the Bible.

I'm planning on writing a researched argument paper discussing the parallels between the bible and the Harry Potter series of books. I'm pretty excited because it should be a really interesting subject to research.

I just ordered this book off of Amazon, and it should be here next week. :D

Not sure if anyone else has done any research into the subject, but if you have and have any other books that I might want to look into for sourced information, I will take any suggestions. :D

All i will say is that Rowlings makes no secrets about her faith, it should come as no surprise that there eould be strong Christian themes i.e. Good v evil in her books......cs lewis with his works is another example

I agree that the themes are pretty obvious...however I think it's an interesting topic to discuss given the negative reputation the books have been given by the religious community.

I've only ever read one Harry Potter book, but wasn't the bad guy a snake or something? And the good guy an old guy with a big white beard?

If I was doing the project, I wouldn't argue in favour of a hidden Christian ethos within HP, but rather, HP conforms to the idealised narrative structures of western Christendom.

Pretty much. It's like an extended morality play.

I think people read into stuff too much. Pretty much all fantasy fiction is a fight between good and evil, it dosen't mean it has any link to the bible.

... other than it helps make the case that the Bible is nothing more than another work of fantasy fiction. :)

There are other parallels. And really, it's not about "reading too much" into anything. I have to write a 10 page researched argument paper about something, so I might as well make it something I'm interested in. I enjoyed the Harry Potter books, and after researching possible theses for the paper, this was the one I felt I'd have the easiest time writing a 10 page paper about.

I do agree that all fantasy fiction has an element in it, but the final Harry Potter book seems to have a lot of Christian themes in it.

I agree the last book has a lot of Christian themes. I'm not sure of themes in the previous books but it's been several years since I've read them.

And I haven't really given it much thought. I was amazed when I realised that the Narnia books are heavily influenced by Christianity, even though it now seems so very obvious.

Lion = Jesus basically.

C.S Lewis took her bestiary right from the middle ages.

You should check some academic journals and see if the topic has been researched already. They might give you some insight.

I thought fundamental christians thought that Harry Potter was evil and had book burnings? Hilarious!

They do, that's why I thought it would be an interesting research topic. They believe that the moral values and whatever else that are in the book are overshadowed by the witchcraft and whatever else and that it's evil. They've had book burnings, and situations where they couldn't burn books, they cut them up with scissors.
