Hey forum goers.

Over the years in England and America there is a populations of teens drinking. I must admit, I drink to much for my age.
And to be honest everyone has done it in there past, which they are not proud of.

As they grow older, the chance that young people will use alcohol grows. Approximately 10 percent of 12-year-olds say they have used alcohol at least once. By age 13 that number doubles. And by age 15, approximately 50 percent have had at least one drink. Teens drink less often than adults. But when teens do drink, they drink more than adults. On average, young people have about five drinks on a single occasion. This behavior is called binge drinking. It is a very dangerous way of drinking that can lead to serious problems and even death (Over a long period of time). Alcohol use by young people often is made possible by adults. After all, teens can’t legally get alcohol on their own. However, it is most often that teens aged 14-15 FEMALES get served at shops on the basis of cup size etc.

What are you thoughts on the subject?

I believe that the drinking age ought to be lowered from 21 to 18, I feel that at age 18, if I'm legally considered an adult, and I'm considered old enough to join the military and possibly kill/die for my government, then I ought to be old enough to have a drink as well.

I think heavy drinking at any age it dangerous, whether you're a teenager or an adult.

That being said, I think the drinking age should be lowered to 18. If you can be drafted, you should be able to drink.

It's all media hysteria, imo. Binge drinking is not a new phenomenon, it's not a problem. Especially since having just "5 drinks" is considered a binge.

Britain's real drinking problem isn't with kids, it's middle aged, middle classed women who sit at home watching tv drinking 1 or 2 bottles of wine a night.

dont know about the drinking age but what ever it is it should be the same as age of joining military or be convicted as an adult

that would seem to be the logical answer however after growing up and seeing what really happens
the majority of the people from age 18 to 21 are still trying to find out what it means to be an adult
plus there are a lot of people who are going to marry and concieve during this period of time.

is it best to allow them access to alcohol during this period of time(dont know why I used this twice but I did so there)
I'd love to let them have it but am I doing them a favor or am I dangling a carrot accross a freeway

I don't drink, but I still agree with this. They're going to find ways to drink anyways if they really want to.

Our drinking age is 18 here and yes it's the binge drinking that's the problem... we have just as much a problem with teen drinkers as anywhere else and we are one of the lowest drinking ages in the country. I have to wonder what it's like in places like Italy and Spain where you are raised on the stuff from infancy? Do you gain a healthy respect for it?

The thing that annoys me the most in England is the Government is trying raise the price of alcohol (tax) so then people obviously won't drink it as much. Drinking isn't half of the problem. CIGARETTES is the biggest problem. Cigarettes massively increases the chance of a person getting cancer (PROVEN) and the government isn't putting cigarettes price up because he's making so much money on the tax....

Where has the English society gone wrong...? I'm sure the country spends more money on the NHS for cancer etc. UGGGHH

But if people want to drink, they are going to regardless of the cost. Cigarettes cost loads but people still buy them. Everytime there is a price hike, people say they'll stop smoking and yet most continue.

People, not the govenment, just need to take responsibility for themselves.

Agree with this. If someone has a drink problem, the'll find a way to get drink and they don't care if it's by illegal means. Increasing the price will just cause more crime. Besides, all hiking up the price is going to do is get more people easily importing booze from France and sending British drinks industry into decline. Dosen't seem like a great idea to me, especially seeing this country is hard up enough as it is.

Yes I agree.

Like in the news recently has been about Scotlands new laws on alcohol sales having loopholes that enable shops to get around it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-15123533

When there's a will there's a way. And too much govenment interference can have the oposite effect and make people want it more because it's wrong.

It isn't new, ya, at least doesn't seem so. I disagree, though, that it's not a problem. Binge drinking can be dangerous for teenagers, they're prone to such bad judgment as is...these girls blacking out and whatnot, idk. Seems pretty awful sometimes.

Overall, though, I don't mind what someone does so long as they are not driving and endangering others. I am also not a fan of alcoholics having children, but hey, can't enforce that as a law.

When I was 18, I went to 7 or 8 parties and got myself drunk at a couple of those parties.

To be honest, I enjoyed myself, and I look back at those times as one of the better times in my life. However, even at that young age, I knew how serious it was to drink and drive, and also how bad of an idea it was to become intoxicated more than once in a while.

I can't say the same for other teens, though.

Those who believe 18 year-olds should be allowed to drink legally must remember that if these youngsters were generally mature enough to drink, then laws making it illegal for them to drink under age 21 in America wouldn't exist.

We allow 18 year olds to drink, I started drinking about 16 but not loads, never in pubs and clubs til I was 17, I knew the dangers and I knew what was a safe limit. Generally i got drunk aged 16 and 17 at house parties when parents went out for a good few hours and came home to rescue us before we got more out of hand. I guess laws in each country exist for a reason, don't ask me what they are, cos I dont have a clue.

Yeah - that's why we let them enlist in the military to fight and die at 18. They can handle killing responsibly, but not drinking.

The law over here says we can drink from age 18.

So..... British kids are more mature than American kids, right? It must be true, because it's the law.
