We all know college is expensive.
Courses.
Room and board.
Textbooks.

My brother had a history class in college and needed 3 textbooks for the class.
Most of us know reading any textbook for a grade isn't fun.
You can venture in the yard or porch, sit on a swing, drink lemonade and read but...
What if a textbook or two is so boring the professor decides to disregard after 2 weeks of reading ?
That's $55.00 down the drain with no return for a refund.

Should there be a guarantee on textbooks ?
How long ?

There are Readers out there that can get the same text.
Should they have guarentees as well ?

I am going to just talk about my dealings with college textbooks since I don't exactly understand the question.

I bought a couple of textbooks that we never used in class. Come to find out, the professors said that the university requires them to request students to buy at least one. Lame. I always kept mine. Not sure why. I thought I might need them for something in the future. HA! Most people sold theirs back to the bookstore to at least get some of the money back that they put into them.

If it's under graduate I always rent my text books from chegg.com.

(No, I am not affiliated with them, yada yada, but they are a great company. For each book you rent, they plant a tree for you. It's bad ass.)

I enjoyed college. I would love to go back for my masters if money for tuition magically appeared.

But then again, I am a nerd that is obsessed with school.

ps- I do not find it orgasmic either. I would find it strange if someone did.

Students get discounts for just about everything, college or non college related. Don't think the've got any right to start moaning about the price of their text books.

I buy older editions of the textbooks I need on eBay for a steep discount.

I agree with Peter. Lots of kids who go to college get their tuition, books and other stuff paid for by the government.

I loved school, and usually bought books new.

I kept all my major books and sold the rest back, either at the bookstore or on Amazon. Depending on where you buy from, you should have X days to return for full refund. The other alternative is to wait until after the first day to buy books, then you can be sure you're getting the right ones, and they'll actually be used.

I agree with Dana ONLY because
a) I got a BA and still work minimum wage
b) I'm working on a Master's degree and will likely end up with the result in a
c) DEBT

Now, if it were free and I had no obligations to make money, I'd go get at least three more BAs, I would love to learn more.

For the topic, I kept all of my books honestly, mostly due to a lack of drive to deal with returning them, and I'm glad I have them to reference, but I think it should be easier to return them and get most of your money back.

I mainly thought his comment was stupid because I don't think (and I could be and quite possibly am wrong) he has ever been to college. So its like saying 'Oh apples are fucking disgusting, I've never tried one but YUCK'

I would skip the university thing if I could get a job and work my way up into the type of job with the kind of pay I want. But unfortunately that is not possible in Europe, you need to have a degree (in the majority of cases).

However having said that, nothing sucks about learning new things and expanding your knowledge at university

Ya, I'm not entirely sure what motivated his sentiment, but I'm extremely butthurt about college for merely a "oh hey I've put myself in debt I will never crawl out of, this is probably the biggest mistake of my life" reason.
:willy_nilly:

Otherwise, I'm sure I'd find a lot of value in college!

Just curious, what type of degree do you have?

The dreaded BA in Psychology. I am working towards becoming a licensed professional counselor with this MA.

Psychology seems to be popular but I didn't really like it. I found it sort of interesting but all of the professors gave anal multiple choice tests about trivial facts given in the textbook. I learned that you can gloss over the stuff that seems unimportant in other classes, but not in psychology!

It was the only thing that really spoke to me, and I found I applied myself there. If I were 18 today and about to enter college, I would work towards becoming a psychiatrist, and if I were smart I would find a track to get in the medical field, but it's application just doesn't fit my personality.

The biggest discount I ever got was a couple of dollars off the price of a movie ticket or a dollar off a meal at the local pizza place. :dunno Nothing big enough to make a fuss about.

I agree with Peter. Lots of kids who go to college get their tuition, books and other stuff paid for by the government.

What? How do they manage that without needing government assistance due to low income? I got most of my tuition covered by the university but that was because of my grades and ACT scores. If I could get the government to pay for my masters degree I would be all over it.
