Email etiquette

We were taught in business acceptable greetings were:

Mr. Whoever,

To Whom It May Concern,

Gentlemen,

But dear indicated a familiarity which was not business like. However things are constantly evolving in this world. I still only use dear for family & friends.

Yeah To whom it may concern if you don't have a name or else Dear Sir/Madam or Dear -name- that's what i was taught anyway! I would just put the persons name or Hi and the persons name or just the message for a friend or family member

Someone not a friend and trying to be somewhat formal:

"Their Name",

message.

Thanks,
Fred ______

That's usually what I do, too. Especially when I'm communicating with my professors at school. There's been a few times I've put dear before their name and then gone back and read it and thought it sounded awkward.

I generally don't even put anything but the body of the email if I'm emailing someone I talk to on a regular basis and am good friends with.
