The other day I went to the mall with my sister and there was a talent search happening. It must have been the day that the girls were performing, unless there were no boys in the contest. Either way, this was going on it the food court, so when my sister and I stopped to eat lunch this is what we saw. There were little girls on stage dancing to "Apple Bottom Jeans", girls dancing promiscuously, wearing revealing clothes. These were LITTLE girls I'm talking about. They must have been under 10. I found it absolutely horrific that any mother, and ESPECIALLY any father, would let their daughter dress like this. You hear so many stories on the news about how little girls are being abducted and sexually abused, do you think this kind of behavior is helping that situation? It's just fueling the fire that all these sick perverts already have. Not long after the 'incident' at the mall, there was an article in Redbook magazine. To briefly describe the article, it was a woman's point of view on the way little girls these days are growing up too fast. Mothers are taking them to salons, getting their nails done, shopping for clothes, etc. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this. But when we have girls like Hannah Montana (who was pole dancing at an awards show) and Lindsey Lohan (who has been in rehab god knows how many times), you start to understand why little girls feel the need to grow up so fast. There are too many of them worried about their looks and what everyone thinks about them instead of worrying about their intellect and the things in life that are really important. Now, I used to play dress up all the time when I was little, loved getting into my mom's make-up and jewelery and clothes and nail polish, putting on her high heels, but the image girls are being force fed wasn't there when I was a kid. Is it just me that sees that little girls are becoming women faster than they should?

even if parents were more conservative it would not stop abductions

i dont think those sick enough to abuse young girls necessarily need the stimulation of seeing mini britanny spears to make them act the way they do....

sick will do whjat sick will do

one thing for sure is that it must be tough being a pre pubescent girl, the pressure on them to be grown up seems to be immense

what about that show on The Learning channel...toddlers and tiaras? that's insane

Exactly. And I'm willing to bet that most of those girls don't want to do that. It's the mothers that are insane and put their daughters through the most ridiculous things. I want more kids but I'm so afraid of having a little girl.

I blame a variety of factors, the media portraying little girls as young women, puberty does occur earlier but isn't that just natural events, models and contests as you pointed out.

Kids don't get to be kids and aren't allowed to be...

Yes. way too fast. When my son was in junior high school I went to pick him up after school and was amazed by the girls 15 & under who were already stretching a D cup. Many were in heels & short everything & revealing. Girls are being taught by age 10 how to get attention with just a smile at the right time. Growing up maybe being turned into sluts more like it. My wife worked at the high school here. Amazing how many young girls had children many more than one before their senior year. It is a sick spiral in my opinion. I remember trying to shop for my daughter when she was young and so many of the clothes were way too revealing for the age of the girls wearing those sizes.

It's a little bit from Column A and a bit from B in my opinion. Yes parents are allowing this to happen, with the contests mentioned etc, plus it's from an even earlier age it happens, with things like "cutest baby contest" and the like. I'm not saying that's an explotation thing because it isn't, but it is a contest, which is a reason why B comes into play, because there is an allowance made for this happening with the way the world is and the need to be seen in the public eye, which is what contests like this are. I mean my own sister wears makeup, and does her hair, and generally looks older, not in an aim to sex herself up because that would never be allowed to happen. So I guess in the end it boils down to either peer pressure, pressure from celebrities these girls might like, or parents who either don't give a shit, or give too much of a shit and think children must look like that.

Right! And it sucks so much because they're just kids. No child should be forced to grow up while they're still so young. When I was taking my son to get his picture taken with Santa, I saw this couple with their two girls. Both of the girls had on these sweaters that revealed their midriffs and short, short skirts. The girls couldn't have been more than 5 or 6. There was another time when I saw a woman who was dressed like she was ready to go perform at a strip club, and had her daughter dressed the same way. Some people will argue "well they're too young to know that they're dressing provocatively". But you know what? You set that precedent for the child and as she gets older she's gonna learn that it's an easy way to get attention and to get what they want.

I always wanted to be like my mother. But I was a throwback to HER day and age. I don't think Mia will EVER be that girlie girl type. She seems to follow her own drumbeat and is more into gadgets and electronics and tearing them down and putting them back together. The only time she gets into my lipgloss is so she can put it on the dog. :(

I don't like this sort of thing. It's not appropriate for young girls to be wearing such revealing clothing - one of the nightclubs in my area has a 14-17 year olds night on wednesdays, and walking past the queue is an argument for abstinence if I ever saw one - no one wants to see girls that young in hotpants and bikini tops, with high heels and makeup plastered on with a trowel.

There's nothing wrong with teaching your kids about modesty and dignity, rather than how to be a miniature skank. Until they can get jobs, at which point they're old enough to make their own clothing choices anyway, they can't buy that stuff for themselves.

LOL! Well, to each her own. But it shows you she's thinking with her head, and not with what she sees. I applaud Mia :) :clap

You're right! And going back to what Fred said, when I was in high school I knew a few girls who got knocked up before senior year more than once. And you know, in America you don't see a lot of modest clothing for little girls. They all have words on the butt that say "hottie" or something along those lines. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't want my daughter walking around with a target on her butt saying "take me now". It's excessive and we need more role models, designers and stylists who are willing to cut against the grain and make clothing for little girls that is APPROPRIATE for little girls, and show them that they don't have to dress like a hooker to be someone important.
