my children know about santa. the look of joy on their face is priceless. my children also have a tradition that we buy for children who are less fortunate than us as well, since they dont have toys. i have given my older children strict instructions to not ruin it for the younger ones right now. call it what you want, i really dont care what anyone thinks about how I raise MY children.

My kids both know the stories of St. Nicholas and what the spirit of Christmas is. That's all that I care about. And honestly it's not right or wrong to tell a kid if Santa is real or not. It's up to the person raising the kids. If others don't like how it's done then it's too darn bad for them.

In the same way my parents told me about Santa and i did appreciate it. I would wanna let my own kids know of Santa too being a fictional character :D

Some parents say it is wrong to lie to your kids about anything including Santa Claus. It's good to tell your kids about Santa but you should tell them he is a fictional character. It's okay to play the game because it's fun to pretend but your kids should know you're pretending.

Another lady I heard speak said she was going to lie to her kids about everything... fairies, Santa, monsters under the bed, you name it. If her husband wants to be the good guy and tell them the truth then good luck trying to keep up with her. Mark Twain said a lie can make it half way around the world before the truth can get its shoes on. Why is she going to lie? Well partly because the expressions kids give you when you BS them are so funny. But also it will teach them to question authority. She will feel successful as a mother when she tells her son something and he says that's bullshit.

What do you think, should parents tell their kids the truth about Santa?

Sooo same thing for religion then? :ninja

Yes of course tell your kids. No wait don't ever tell your kids Santa exist, than you won't have this problem to begin with.

There wasn't when Santa was born Ed.

" The American version of the Santa Claus figure received its inspiration and its name from the Dutch legend of Sinter Klaas, brought by settlers to New York in the 17th century.

Of course there wasn't. But now there is. Time to let go.

sounds pretty boring too me. i think youd lose a 5 year olds interest in 2 minutes....

So hang on, cosmic events, the size of which are so hard to comprehend, matter traveling distances that makes Santas journey look like a single step is boring?

The most awesome thing about kids is that their minds aren't closed, Dana.

*shakes head*

The problem with Ed's method is the fact that it's fucking boring to kids and they'll get bored. But no, they shouldn't be lied to, but the problem is the main thing in society is conditioned towards believing in it. And it's too late to not do it now.

Plus, you'll be denying people jobs as the fake santa's.

So a fat dude in a red outfit is more exciting than the universe? I think you'd be surprised. Kids find wonder in the world around us, nonsense like santa is just fluff. Teach a kid about our galaxy, it's age, it's size, it's beauty, it's power, then you'll see real wonder.

I remember my father explaining cosmology to me. An engineer, he always kept up to date with the latest scientific discoveries, I think space in particular appealed to his mechanical knowledge. Hearing about the size of the universe from him was awe-inspiring. I remember those things vividly, such nice childhood memories. I do not remember any bullshit about santa. Funny that.

I loved learning about outer space when I was young. But learning Santa was fake, I was a little cut inside, but it wasn't a big deal. Maybe Santa is okay to believe in, but don't rub it in too much, just tell your kids that Santa only visits the popular countries lol.

To kids yeah. Sheer marketing power you see. Oh don't get me wrong, the universe can be interesting, it really can. I got a space set thingy for a birthday once. Loved it. But it's easier to tell kids about Santa than it is about the galaxy.

I think that's the point - it's just easier to do the santa thing... how many of us adults actually understand this stuff anyway? We let the marketing companies and corporations take care of moulding the youth for us. :(

While you're at it, why don't you tell them about our thinning ozone layer and how one day we won't be able to breathe, I'm sure that'll make for a great bedtime story. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good conversation to have with our children, mostly the importance of recycling and reusing.....but I've never heard of a child going to bed with visions of composting dancing through his or her head....lol

They won't dream of compost, they'll be dreaming of their awesome veggie patch and how the tree they planted will give them oxygen to breathe lmao.
