it's really hard to comment to something like this.

i do have to question what is in the curriculum of a college ceramics course that a girl with down's who graduated high school wouldn't be able to manage.

next we'll see how somebody with a cleft palate got kicked out of a public speaking course. how would we ever have had all that wonderful work from stacy keach if that were a policy? (e.g., sgt stedenko in up in smoke)

that is ridiculous
ok I get it the school does not want to allow this student
to get a credit for the course and doesnt want to change the learning level
ok
youve got 20 students 1 has down's
19 students can be taught at learning level 100
1 student can be taught at learning level 99
if the teacher changes her teaching style to level 99
then 20 students get cheated out of a higher quality learning experience
if the teacher changes her teaching style to level 100
and is consistant
the 1 student with down's may have issues reguarding comprehension

I am positive that the details of this event are more or different than that article
always is

that would all be reasonable if we were talking calculus or something like that, but this is a ceramics class.

you're most likely correct that there's more to it than is getting reported. i just don't see how a downs child with a hs diploma is going to be hindered in any significant way in a ceramics class.

a lot of those down's kids are more intelligent than the trailer trash kids i see around here.

no disrespect
the girl could be just fine
they should have just done it and if there were issues then make decisions
most likely they denied her just know she has downs and not accessing her
intelligence
for that they are wrong

if that's what actually happened, they should be sued for discrimination.

they're lucky that the girl's father seems to be a very devout and humble man and doesn't intend to make waves.

Why was she kicked out? The article doesn't say.

This is the worst fucking type of sensationlist bollocks journalism and you retards have all been done in by it. For shame.

Eliza Schaaf, who graduated last June from Ashland High School, received a certified letter Saturday from Dean of Students Laura O'Bryan stating that her decision would stand. In the letter, dated Nov. 19, Bryan reiterated that no accommodations are available to Schaaf that would enable her participation without altering the coursework.

I think it's not hard to draw the conclusion here as to why she was removed.

They shouldn't have to alter the course work for one student, it sucks but I think they're within their rights to remove her, if her parents paid for her to attend the school then they should definitely get a refund.

please share that with us because i'm having a tough time seeing any justification to think they even need to modify the coursework in a ceramics class for that girl.

i've been around downs kids and most i've seen would have no problem in a ceramics class. i've never met any closely; it was friends who worked with them and there was a special class in our religious school for them.

I'm not justifying what they did. I merely stated that it's clear why they removed her. He asked why she was kicked out. It says in the paragraph I quoted that the letter reiterated something about them not being able to make accomodations for her.

i question the school's justification in using that as the excuse. i don't think that girl could not successfully complete the course --- especially as an audit. the whole thing is elitist, authoritarian bullshit.

go read aldous huxley's brave new world. this is an example of the alphas and betas discriminating against the delta and gammas with the chi's conditioned to do everything for everybody else.

i see. that's where we part on this.

you seem to be accepting that as the reason why while i'm wanting to know what specific impairment it was that was going to necessitate the modification in the curriculum they thought this girl required.

without getting specific, no court of law is going to rule in favor of the school in a discrimination tort.

I don't need to read jack shit, this school doesn't have to accept anyone it doesn't want to, and they don't have to justify it either.

You're assuming I'm accepting it as a reason, when that's not really the case. I merely was showing Zorak what the article said in regards to the situation.

I have two brothers with special needs. One with autism and the other who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2007. I'm fully on the side of not understanding why this needed to happen. I would imagine that the girl would not have signed up for a ceramics class if she did not believe she could handle the course. And if she's made it this far, I don't understand why now there's a problem with her needing a modification. If she asked to be graded on a different scale because for some reason she's not as physically capable as the other students, that's not fair. However, if they merely assumed she needed some sort of assistance or modification because she has Down's Syndrome, then I believe that's ludicrous and discriminatory. The problem here is that the article isn't really clear or specific on the whole situation, so it's hard to judge not given all the facts.
