Well, after Michael Jackson dying yesterday, it got me thinking about other "high profile" deaths of celebrities or other important people... one of my co-workers was saying this was one of those things where you're always going to remember where you were and what you were doing when you got the news. This is more referring to surprising deaths, not ones that were due to a long-standing condition such as cancer or to older (80+) people.

The ones I can think of that happened in my lifetime that I have a fairly vivid memory of are

Princess Diana
Selena
Kurt Cobain

John Lennon, John Wayne (RIP), Ronald Reagan.

Oh was this a thread about what we remember? Or who we gave a fuck about?

A little of both... I was more of the shocking type deaths where there was a lot of media attention. Along the lines of Elvis, Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, etc.

I think any high profile deaths you remember.

John Lennon was the first, but there was Reagan, the Pope, Princess Diana, Mother Theresa, Kurt Cobain, Payne Stewart, Dan Snyder, Herb Brooks...there are more but I figured I'd keep the list short.

First one that shook me up was Bob Crane. I was a big "Hogan's Heroes" fan and the news tore me up.
Finding out later that Bob was freaky before freaky was cool was another blow.

Also remember the night that Jerry Garcia died. It was like the Internet exploded...
