How old is the Earth?

it's pretty disturbing that this is even being debated. I mean, really very disturbing. No wonder society is lagging far behind scientific understanding when it comes to things like the environment and current technological possibilities. What next? A debate on whether the world is flat? On whether the Earth revolves around the sun or not?

The science used to determine the age of the earth, is the very same science that was behind the atomic bomb, for example. If they were wrong about the age of the earth, then the atomic bomb would never have worked. However, it did, because, funnily enough, science actually works. It's not guesswork based on some interpretation of some book a few blokes wrote about some guy that most likely never even existed. It's based on observation and repeatable experimentation.

The Earth is 4.54 billion years old. This has been known for over 60 years now. Come on people.

Some people need their fantasies to keep their blinders on right.:cool

Well I have no idea really, I'm not even going to guess because:
(a) religious shit doesn't prove anything; and
(b) you can't just trust science.
And I say you can't just trust science because of scientism...this assumption that if everything is scientific and empirically tested then it's true and it's scientific fact and it's knowledgeable. Because, science DOES limit itself to what it can observe/measure/test.
So I'm not going to trust anything, and not make a stab at all :D
And also because, I don't give a crap :)

of course, I'm hoping to square off on the side of science and logic against mumbo jumbo superstition and ignorance.

Which side are you on?

You mean the earth isn't flat? I can't believe you'd say such a lie especially as I am a member of the flat earth society. It's a well known fact that ships reguarly sail off the earth becuase they got too close to the edge.

On a serious note, I do think the idea that the earth is 5,000 years old is hilarious.
Years ago I found a truely hilarious fundamentalist Christian site about it and the "facts" they were portraying were just beyond belief. Like I remember them saying the earth was only 5,000 years old becuase there aren't enough stone age skeletons because if the earth is old then there should be thousands of skeletons everywhere. Then they started ranting that the earth can't be old becuase they can dig in their garden without finding human bones...

I wonder how man could outlive dinosaur if they lived together. how did one become extinct yet man didnt?
Because it was night time when that big rock hit the earth and humans were in their caves sleeping. Dino's were just roaming around doing their dino thing and all of a sudden.... kaboooooom.... lights out.

Well if you do not believe the bible nor science what do you believe is more the question ?

If you don't believe radiometric dating what is your theory ?

So what is your method and how are you going to justify the date and prove it ? Where you there the day the Earth was made, the only real way to prove when it was created 100% ?

Even if creationists don't believe in carbon dating, do they believe that the speed of light is a constant?

Think about it, if God created everything 5k or 6k years ago, then we wouldn't be able to see any stars in the sky except the sun. Since the speed of light is 300k kilometers/sec and the distance is so great, we are seeing the stars as they were millions of years ago. Some are billions of light years away. So explain that...
