How absolutely awful.

No dog should be allowed around a baby or small child period. Even your own pets. You just never know what will set a dog off. The baby/child could innocently pull the dog's ear or tail or just move randomly and the dog might act impulsively.

I would rather be over cautious than live with regrets of such a tragedy.

I think it depends how the pet feels towards the child.

Pets that feel protective towards children will only ever nip them or bite them gently if they are being annoyed.

Pets that feel threatened however...

I respect your opinion.

How does one know what a pet is thinking or feeling at any given moment?

I stand on the side of caution when it comes to little ones. 100% of the time.

There is plenty of time to share the joy of a pet with a child when they are old enough to understand and respect animals.

staffies are the choice of chavs because of the potential aggression.....jack russels are bred to put down rabbit, badger and fox holes to flush out the prey, they are aggressive.....neither breed should have been in the same room as a baby

I think all dogs have the potential to be vicious...its instinct, we get off days and so do dogs.
That said i think all owners should be responsible for the pets actions....I have a rottweiler cross who has been raised with my youngest who is now 2.
I say that Bella is the sofest dog, and would never harm a fly...but! I would never leave them unattended.
Firstly a baby shouldnt be left unnattended with or without a dog present.....secondly , because even if a dog means no harm, can cause it unintentionally.

^^ok how many typos???

With a little boy on the way this story makes me feel sick. You are right: there will be no animal allowed Liam, even supervised. Period! :mad

Screw the typos - yer post is dead on :thumbup

When we brought our kiddo home as a baby, the dogs stayed outside. I kept a keen eye on them as my kid got old enough to be out amongst them. To date, the dogs have shown nothing but affection towards my son. But yeah, it's common sense to be careful. Dogs are dogs. Parents need to act responsibly.

You assume correctly. If a friendly animal gets near my kid I will kick the ass of the animal's owner then my own for letting it get too close.

:humm: Yeah, I can see you wanting to do that. It's not like you can wait around to see if the animal is going to take a bite out of yer kid before you do something

Yeah, I attitude is, why does an animal need to be near a kid? To be responsible for another human's life is the greatest one any person could have, especially if it's your own kid. Reduce risk as close to zero as you can.

That is how I have always felt. A human life should ALWAYS come before an animal's life. Period.

So you would not take someones life to protect the life of an animal? Let's say the animal did no harm, and was set upon by someone whos only intent was to kill that animal.

I wouldn't kill anyone or anything that wasn't trying to kill me or a loved one of mine.

OK, just to get it clear in my head - would you consider a pet a loved one?

I'll play my cards to be fair here. I don't actually know what I'd do in the case of one of my dogs. I would attack anyone who would harm my family, and probably my dogs. I would try and keep from killing them as long as I could insure the safety of the aforementioned. I also think I would do something similar if I saw someone else being attacked.

Now, with that said, I'm well aware that I cannot guarantee what I would do until I'm faced with that situation.
