THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.
In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.
Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

It was on November 6, weeks after his Beijing triumph, that 23-year-old Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party.

He was visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl he was secretly seeing who was a student there.

Our source revealed: “Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night.
“He arrived with a group of girls hanging all over him. Jaws hit the floor when he walked in. You don’t get many celebrities in Columbia, so when Phelps comes to your party it’s a very big deal.

Obnoxious

“He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.

“Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy. He couldn’t get enough of all the attention.”

As he basked in his hero status, Phelps knocked back beers and shots of spirits. And when a student offered him the glass bong engraved with red writing, he did not hesitate, says our source.

The 6ft 4ins athlete, in a white T-shirt and navy cap worn back to front, clasped the device in his huge hands and inhaled deeply.

Our source said: “You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do.

“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

I find it appalling that such an athlete who has trained so hard and accomplished so much uses such a small bong.

:24::24:- I think he was more interested in speed hitting, and a six footer would really slow him down.

So far I'm only finding this story in tabloids and blogs quoting from tabloids. Anyone see it from a major news source?

I think the law banning cannabis in sport is stupid, as someone already said, it's not like steroids, it's not going to improve his swimming. However, he knows the rules and if he's prepared to throw his great career away just so he can do a bong, he's rather stupid imo.

Phelps suspended over 'pot pipe'
The US swimmer Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months after photographs were published appearing to show him smoking cannabis.
USA Swimming, the sport's governing body in the US, said no "anti-doping rule" had been violated.
But the federation said it wanted to send a strong message to Phelps because he had disappointed so many people.
Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and has been feted as one of the world's greatest athletes.
The 23-year-old was caught on camera inhaling from a type of glass pipe which can be used for smoking cannabis.

The photo, which appeared in Britain's News of the World newspaper, was said to have been taken at a student party last November when Phelps was on a long break from training.
The Olympic star has apologised for his "regrettable behaviour", but did not say whether he had taken drugs.
USA Swimming said in a statement: "This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.
"Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust."
USA Swimming has cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period.
Cereal and snack firm Kellogg has also reportedly said it will not renew a sponsorship contract with Phelps, on the grounds his behaviour is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg".

He wasn't even competing when he smoked it. I don't think he should have been suspended. It's not like he took performance enhancing drugs or anything.

I agree but I don t believe in changing rules just because a top athelete got caught, he knew the rules and he broke them, avoiding a bit of puff really isn't too much to ask of someone who gets the prestige and money of Phelps.

:homo:
The only thing that pisses me off about this situation at ALL is that if he had received a DUI they'd be paying to send him to rehab or some shit and give him a slap on the wrist

i will agree with you. however you must also remember he is a 19 year old. how many of us can say we always made the best decisions at 19. kellogg announced that they will not renew their contract with him. i also think that other stars or people in the spot light have done far worse then this will little press about it.

As we spoke about this a few times over... its nuts.

the guy smoked the reefer when he was in college, granted he is a role model now but this happened before this last achievement he had at the olympics... i say if anything hes young, hes american, he smoked some herb and still managed to kick ass at the olympics. how is this a bad thing?

role model? how about all the slutty little whores on the disney channel getting:
half ass naked pictures of them on magazines
stupi stipid myspace angles pictures of themin their underwear
or that little broad that mwas stupid enough to take nude pictures of herself and have them posted in the internet...

STILL, they are all being whored out by disney like no other.. and yet Those are the girls most kids nowdays familiarize with simply because they get far more common and daily exposure to our kids!

gah, im getting agged just thinking about it lol

*shakes head*
