Just wondering is all of you are doing what you wanted to do when you were in high school or college? Are you still considering changing your job/career if you are not where you want to be now?

I wanted to be a doctor in high school, but the idiot guidance counselor I had talked me out of it! :mad Don't know if I would have liked it or not, though--don't know if I could deal with all the whining patients--I don't really have a lot of empathy for people so maybe it was better.

What about you? What do you do? What did you want to do? What are you planning on changing to?

Oh my goodness. I kick myself in the ass all the time for not getting a degree in Education. I could be off the same time my kids are out of school. And kids are so fun.

I did Human Resources for a lot of years, but now I'm in IT. After taking a few years off to stay at home, it's really difficult to get employed again. But I'm learning new things and I love that.

Nope, I'm not. I had 2 different dreams...one was to be a lawyer and the other was to be a physical therapist. When I got into college I started by majoring in physical therapy until I realized, in my 2nd year, that it wasn't what I *really* wanted. I changed majors 4 times in one week before finally going w/ my first love...the law. I actually graduated w/ a BA in Legal Assistant Studies w/ a minor in Criminal Justice.

After all that, what did I do??? I came out of college and began working as a dispatcher and operations manager for a limousine company. *shrugs* One day I saw an ad in the paper for a job as a dispatcher for 911. I wasn't sure I wanted the job and damn sure didn't think I would get it...boy was I wrong!!! Once I got into the job I realized that it's what I'm meant to do in life...this is it for me. I don't plan on leaving my career. :)

Well sort of... I mean, my main goal for quite a few years was to be an author. That's still top priority but I've branched out into wanting to do movies and comic books and even the plot for a video game - just art in general, really - so in that way I'm kind of there. I mean, I'm writing and once I get a video camera the movie thing will start.

A main issue of writing is that, not only will it cost to publish, but authors don't get much money unless you can really hit it big, ala Stephen King. And then when you take the fact that I'm making a more "avant-garde" book, you kind of cut down on the amount of people that will like your book. Something easily digestible will be more popular than something that challenges you, as a whole. So I'll probably always work a shitty job while I write, but it would be perfect if I could get by on that.

Lately though I've been thinking about going to Uni but then I realize that it won't do me any good. I don't even know what I'd take (what, like... film studies??), and it doesn't solve my current problems anyways.

So yeah, sort of.

Interesting--I would have never guessed that. What is the subject of your book?

Nope not doing what i thought i would be. I went to school for psychology.. my dream is to open a child psychiatry center.. maybe that will happen some someday. in the meantime i would just be happy getting into the field in some way. however, there is not a whole lot of demand for it here so i am thinking of relocating at some point in the near future.

I want to be an ICT Technician. I dunno when I will find a job in it though. I'm finishing college in 2 weeks and there has only been one ICT Technician job advertised in the newspaper. I'm going to have to go on the hunt now!

I wanted to be an anthropologist (I really wanted to be Indiana Jones) or a teacher. I was originally majoring in anthropology but I transfered to a college that only has it as a minor. After seeing a performance of the signing group from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, I decided I wanted to go into deaf education. After two or three years, I decided to switch to elementary education. I'm now a VPK teacher (a state funded program to get them ready for kindergarten), which I wouldn't mind staying with if the pay was better.

In college, [currently] going to major in Computer Science; plan is to become a Systems Programmer (Operating systems, compilers, software like Office, Database work, hardware/software management utilities, et cetera); not a fan of web-based programming, such as the back-end to this site.

My infatuation with technology started at a young age; when I got remote control cars for Christmas, the first thing I did was to take the car apart (mainly the ugly tops) to expose the circuitry underneath (but I would not touch the circuitry, I still wanted to play). The wondering how it works was put on hold, when the family got an Amstrad PC1512 (old fucking computer). Played Dig-Dug/Digger, in real time, not like the java/flash/w/e implementations you see online now, among many older games. I was introduced to the command line shell back then, finding everything and all that. Then the circuitry wonderment bit me again, and I built my first computer. Games became my new endearment, and that started my inquisitive nature on how games are made. Which brought me to software development, and my current project(s).

I plan on writing both a compiler [which will be used to write the major portions of], an operating system, and a game.

Now, which architecture, I have not figured out just quite yet, but am leaning toward the beast that lies within the PlayStation 3, the IBM Cell processor.

So, now you know [some of] my life's goals, I shall release the floor to someone else. :)

Not even close. Everything I wanted to be growing up requires some kind of degree, and my dumb ass didn't go to college. :dunno

The only dumbassy part about it is, you are not in college... :thumbdown

Shit, when I was going to community college, I had people like 50 years older than me, in my class. :D

Granted, she knew enough not needing to be in the course, but still.

Stop by your local community college, Donnie, see if they have something inline with your experience, or if you wanted to branch out. :)

Plus, if you decide to pick up a bachelor's while there, you save monies! :thumbup

Education may be harder when you are older, but no less worth it.

Interesting--I would have never guessed that. What is the subject of your book?

Well being an anarchist there's an anarchist theme running through it, but really it's a book about contradictions and how nothing is clear cut. For example, there's this whole thing with cop killing. Hypothetically speaking, Mulder, say you're anti-authority, so you'd be anti-cop, what will killing a cop really accomplish in that situation? They are the law, but they are also people with families.
Or maybe, say someone's racist, but they're really nice people outside of that. The book tackles things like that, amongst more. I'd say I'm pretentious (which I'm sure will be a criticism) but this book has to reflect life as I see it, or it's not honest. And really, I have fun writing that kind of stuff and making the layout on pages be weird or just using "gimmicks" in general. YANNO?

And since it is a fiction novel, it's heavily symbolic so I like to think it's not the same as sitting there reading a textbook of ANARCHIST THEORY, RAWR RAWR. I mean, it won't actually even say the word anarchy so it's possible to take other things from it. Plus, the anarchist theory is kinda dumbed down anyways since it is fiction and all.

And who knows, maybe my next project will be something really simple and straight forward. Depends how I feel at the time.

Thanks for asking :)

I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 5. To get a head of that when I was 18 I worked at an animal emergency hospital. I saw all the bullshit that the doctors had to go through and decided that it wasn't for me. So my next step was to be a veterinarian technician. I'm going to try and start classes for that late fall hopefully.
